Deaf's Short Story My Body Is My Own Business
Life does not have to be complex to be good, this is simply because a good life is, a life where a person is a “good person.” This has always been my perception, however lately, pondering this idea has left me with the question “What is a good person?” There is such a vast diversity of what a good person is, does that now make it complex to have a good life?
It is a given that you are a decent person if, you are compassionate and would never intentionally harm anyone and if you treat all people and situations with dignity and respect. A good person is not, racist, or judgmental and advocates that we all have the same blood, so we are all equals.
If this is the type of person you are, you are a good person and this would imply you lead a good life. This is a pretty simple notion, is it not? For me, living this way is quite

Throughout this story, Mustafa leaves you pondering the idea, that the Muslim culture has a brilliant way of living. Muslims wear hijabs. Wearing a hijab takes away the ability to judge others based on their gender, wealth, and beauty; leaving you only to focus on a person’s character. This way of living, deepens my current belief that we should only be defined by our actions. The story leaves you considering if we are unintentionally judgmental and if it is possible that we intuitively judge people by what we see. Do we instinctively look at the homeless man and wonder what bad choices could he have made to land him here? Do we avoid eye contact or are we are afraid to approach him because we are not sure of his mental stability? These thoughts would be judgmental and bias, would they not? Even if you don’t think you are a judgmental person and surely don’t mean to be, is it possible that there is a little piece of us that automatically does judge - making us not that good of a

If you could change anything about your physical appearance what it be and why? A few would ask for smaller stomachs or bigger muscles, while others may ask for curlier or straight hair. The truth is everyone has at least one improvement they would love to fix about their appearance. Sadly, humans fail to realize that physical appearance means absolutely nothing! Lisa Sindin, author of, “I Am Not My Body”, opened my eyes to this. You are not your physical appearance, is the point Lisa is trying to get across. Determined to overcome her disability, Lisa’s remarkable drive and determination to show people that her disability didn’t define her abilities to what she set her mind to do proves that a person is in control of their mind. Slightly disabled,…

Throughout the essay, “Becoming Disabled” by Rosemarie Garland-Thomas, her main claim that she argues is that she wants the disabled community to be politicized in the eyes of society. First, Garland-Thomas talks about politicizing disabilities into a movement. She compares and contrasts movements for race and sexual orientations to the movements about disability (2). Disability movements have not gained as much attention as race or sexual orientation movements because so many Americans do not realize how prominent disability separation is in America. She wants people to start recognizing that disability is just as important as race and other movements. Next, Garland-Thomas speaks about different types of disabilities and how they aren’t always…

In A Good Man is Hard to Find, the author, Flannery O’Connor, focuses heavily on the suggestion of “good” in the story’s characters. However, the perception of what makes a person “good” is different for each character. I believe that an individual’s upbringing and placement in society determine that person’s definition of what makes one “good.” Subsequently, I believe that a person can only be considered "good" based on his or her intentions and actions.…

In Deaf Culture, there are two types of literature, Deaf literature and ASL literature. Deaf literature is “composed of works by deaf authors and literary works by deaf or hearing authors, which include deaf characters in short stories, novels, poetry, and plays” (“Deaf Literature”). The Deaf Child Crossing series (https://www.goodreads.com/series/120992-deaf-child-crossing), written by Marlee Matlin, is an example of Deaf literature. The series is considered Deaf literature because a deaf author wrote it and the main character in the story is deaf. Yet, Deaf literature is only one unique form of literature that the Deaf Culture has. The other form of literature in the Deaf Culture is ASL literature.…

In "Compassion and the Individual," Tenzin Gyatso, the fourteenth Dalai Lama, describes a good person as good mental and physical health care. what i take from this is that you have to put people before yourself and care about everyone not just yourself or your family. the physical part could mean you have excellent health and donate blood or organs to people, or become a organ donor after you have passed away. the mental also could mean that you have good mental strength and can be in certain situation you can act accordingly to it . according to the Dalai Lama a good person can’t be selfish or greedy. the dalai lama says you need love to be a good person. The root of many problems is that society tends to try to only fix issues that personally affect the individual. Since America is an individualistic culture, we tend to help solve problems that are motivated by personal achievement, past situations and immediate results. A lot of times we forgetting the bigger picture and looking at a grand scheme issue I would like to solve the lack of education for language available to deaf citizens of third world countries.…

A person of character is, someone to admire, who sets a good example, who knows the difference between right and wrong. To me no one is good or bad. This is a fact that should be kept in mind when we try to judge a person's overall character. We are all different and complex. I think I show most of the elements a person of good character should show. Not only have I been looked up to and admired, but I try to keep as active as possible (a quality younger students may look up to). Joining different sports, excelling in academics, and joining other extracurricular activities, gives me this opportunity and also demonstrates my reliability. Like a person with a good character I like to help anyone that is in need of a little guidance. I've always been known to make people laugh or feel better when they are down, which seems to me like a person with a great character, and want to better life's sometimes harsh obstacles.…

Have you ever felt God call you to do something, and yet brush it aside as though it was meant for someone else? I became enchanted with American Sign Language in high school, when I befriended a Deaf group of students. I now realize I was fascinated by the language because, unbeknownst to me at that time, I am a visual and kinesthetic learner. Any time I saw Deaf people or Sign Language Interpreters in the community, I couldn't help myself but to watch them. By the time I was a mother of two I knew I wanted to be fluent in the language, although finding the time seemed out of the question. After four children and seventeen years of marriage the door to my future career was opened. My marriage had ended and I was responsible for providing a financially stable home for my children.…

The “good life” is subjective and relative to each human being as we all have different perspectives on what the “good life” is. As we experience life, we come to the understanding of what “good” means at its bases. I was asked whether or not I would cheat to get into university and I had said yes. I had decided that it was a great decision because it meant making my parents happy and helping my community in every form possible, but to my fellow classmates I was wrong. In this situation, both arguments were correct as we all came from different walks of life and different experiences. Since we all have different views on what the “good life” is we can get countless different answers. But if I were to classify the good life, Edward J. Stieglitz explains it perfectly;…

A good man can be one that is always honest or that always does what is morally correct, or someone who is hard working and determined. These types of actions are rewarded by God, as the Catholic religion indicates, by letting you enter heaven in the long term, but in the short term by helping you out in other aspects of your life where it might be needed. Not everyone believes this though. You may believe in karma and always do well onto others so you will receive the same in return. Not only is a good man seen in a religious way but also in our everyday lives. In contrast to an evil man, a good man usually gets what he proposed himself.…

Girls, we all worry about our appearance. I’m pretty sure you go back more than 3 times to see yourself in a mirror before you go out for school. We worry about our hair to be well straight or curled up. To have clean, long and well painted nails. Worry for our eyes to look big and round. Have the perfect amount of mascara in our eyelashes. Our lips to look desirable. We worry about our purse, belt, shoes and accessories to match our perfectly combined outfit. Am I right? Most of you will agree with me, but stop and think for a second, do these things really help you develop academically? It might give you motivation to come to school every day; however it doesn’t always work that way.…
