Deaf Community Experience Paper
On a Saturday night I went to an outing for school, expecting it to be boring even though we were going to a bowling alley. I walked into the building slowly and almost walked out before anyone could recognize me. I was very nervous all day about going to be introduced to the Deaf community. I stayed in a small group with people from class by the end of the night I met some amazing people. Learning about Deaf culture and actually seeing it is not all that different; the Deaf were so willing to teach us new words and tried their best to communicate with us.
I met people that are in ASL one all the way through ASL four and people of all ages in the Deaf community. They welcomed us into the group and appreciated how we were learning about their culture and language. Beily, an aspiring Interpreter and a member of Daytona State’s ASL club introduced herself to me and I later found out she put the event together. She signed to me the entire night so it helped me with the learning process and gave me an idea of how it would be in the Deaf community. She was so passionate about signing it was very neat to see a student communicate with someone in a language I am learning.

This was an experience I think I would do again if given the opportunity; I enjoyed the company and comfort (after a little) that was given to me as I would say I am still a beginner in ASL. This was a night to remember for sure and it has changed my outlook even more on Deaf culture and community. By that I mean, I was able to make mistakes or get stuck on certain words and instead of laughing at me they helped me figure out the word they were signing. ASL is a lot of fun once it is learned and being able to communicate in a silent language will always amaze me. I am glad I am in ASL and was given the opportunity to go out, have fun and get a glimpse of the Deaf community and its
