Deaf Community Experience Paper
On a Saturday night I went to an outing for school, expecting it to be boring even though we were going to a bowling alley. I walked into the building slowly and almost walked out before anyone could recognize me. I was very nervous all day about going to be introduced to the Deaf community. I stayed in a small group with people from class by the end of the night I met some amazing people. Learning about Deaf culture and actually seeing it is not all that different; the Deaf were so willing to teach us new words and tried their best to communicate with us.
I met people that are in ASL one all the way through ASL four and people of all ages in the Deaf community. They welcomed us into the group and appreciated how we were learning about their culture and language. Beily, an aspiring Interpreter and a member of Daytona State’s ASL club introduced herself to me and I later found out she put the event together. She signed to me the entire night so it helped me with the learning process and gave me an idea of how it would be in the Deaf community. She was so passionate about signing it was very neat to see a student communicate with someone in a language I am learning.

This was an experience I think I would do again if given the opportunity; I enjoyed the company and comfort (after a little) that was given to me as I would say I am still a beginner in ASL. This was a night to remember for sure and it has changed my outlook even more on Deaf culture and community. By that I mean, I was able to make mistakes or get stuck on certain words and instead of laughing at me they helped me figure out the word they were signing. ASL is a lot of fun once it is learned and being able to communicate in a silent language will always amaze me. I am glad I am in ASL and was given the opportunity to go out, have fun and get a glimpse of the Deaf community and its

"The Colorado Institute for the Education of Mutes" was founded by Jonathan R. Kennedy in 1874. Jonathan Kennedy had previously served as the steward of the Kansas School for the Deaf in Olathe. Kennedy opened the school on April 8, 1874. It started with only seven students; three of them were Kennedy own children and added six more during the course of that year. Also, its first location was a house in downtown Colorado Springs. The house was rented for $50/month. The student population rapidly outgrew the space available and with a donation of ten acres by the founder of the city of Colorado Springs, General William Palmer, the school moved to its current campus in 1876.…

    Through Deaf Eyes Summary

It was interesting to hear, and see, what kind of challenges that deaf people faced. One of the people I found interesting was. A hearing French professor had brought the language from France and that was how it signing had started. I thought that was interesting, because not only was it a long time to create a form of communication for the deaf community; they were also mistreated for their inability to communicate with the rest of the world. Another person that I found interesting, was Alexander Gram Bell, had a wife and mother, who were deaf. On top of that, it was startling at first, to hear that the deaf community treated him as a sort of “boogeyman.” I found it fascinating that he is well known in a hearing class for inventing the telephone, but in the deaf class, he is known for starting the Oralism form of communication in the deaf community. Along with that, Bell fought against having sign language being taught, because he felt that it was a “borrowed language.” Instead he wanted the people community to learn to speak and read lips. It was interesting to hear, because I assumed that most people who were deaf just learned sign language for their communication.…

Get Lit was a great experience to me. I went there thinking it wasn’t going to be fun but I was wrong. It was nice seeing a lot of people dressed up and getting into the event. There was a ton of booths set up all around the student success center for everyone to go enjoy and have fun learning about literature. One of them I went to was the Wizard of Oz booth. I never have seen Wizard of Oz in many years and after talking with the people at the booth I have learned more than I ever knew. It was about a girl named Dorothy and her dog named Todo. They were hit by a tornado which landed them in a new place called Oz and there they met weird characters. They had met a Scarecrow, Lion, and a Woodman. They all became friends and went on an adventure…

The book “Deaf Again” is unique because the author has been on both sides of the spectrum. He had been hearing for some time and now is Deaf. He shows each viewpoint and doesn’t make it just for hearing or just for the Deaf. This author is also unique in showing his feelings for both hearing and also being Deaf.…

After watching this video, I was surprised at how important the club was to the deaf community. Most hearing people try not to go too far from home, but the deaf would drive from miles around to come to the club because it was such an important part of their life. It amazed me that they would go to all that trouble just to socialize. I also found it surprising how difficult it is for the Deaf to make friends. Without a community of other Deaf people the communication barrier is enormous. Many of the types of activities the hearing world takes for granted…like ball games and plays….are all the more difficult for the Deaf to enjoy when no one else thinks about accommodating them.…

Bands of America was very cool this year! The bus ride went very well, only problem being that every bump hit would rewind the movie that was playing. Once we got there everything went very smoothly. I got to help the band moms put the hat boxes in order! Warm ups there were a lot of jitters in the air it seemed, but not bad ones. Waiting to get on the field was extremely nerve wracking. But, once we got on the field everything seemed nice and mellow, like we were back on the field at home, it just had a different crowd and background. I feel really good about the performance. We did the best we could do and our best got us third in our class! Heading to the hotel and getting to lay down and rest was very nice and much needed. The food was…

Tomorrow Dad Will Still Be Deaf shocked me because it was a VHS. I have not watched one of these since I was a kid. Kelsey even showed up as I was watching the video and we were reminiscing on our childhood. That was neat because I was able to compare my upbringing to Bonnie Kraft’s. She is a hearing woman who was born to Deaf parents, but feels as though she has a “Deaf heart.” This is a unique perspective and that is why I enjoyed it so much. While learning ASL, you are constantly exposed to this culture. This is a side that is mentioned, but not gone into great detail.…

    Aa Meeting Reflection

I was intrigued by the discussion and people sharing their life stories. It demonstrates an understanding of where they were, how they got there and where they are now. I was very surprised that people would just tell their life story and the terrible things they have done that got them to such a low point in their lives. It was fascinating to me how they would speak in front of many to reveal the low and high points in their lives. I also understand why they would go ahead and share their experiences, strength, and hopes. It is very beneficial because not only would it help that member that formed a successful recovery, it will also help encourage others as well. I am the type of person that wouldn’t open up like that so I give them a lot of praise. The meeting ended and everyone would leave with hope that would get them through the next 24 hours. After attending the meeting, I get a better understanding of what Alcoholics Anonymous. At first, I thought to myself why do we have to attend one of these meetings for class but now I can see why. Now, I see AA as a judgment free program where everyone attending is the same and can relate to each other without judgment. It is a program to get to the root of the problem and how to overcome it. It was an educational experience and I look forward to…

In my professional career I see myself working with the deaf population either as an interpreter or a social worker. I have a strong connection to this community and feel it is an underserved population. I plan to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or a Senior Interpreter and I would like to work with clients and obtain a career at the county working for the Department of Mental Health. I want to make a difference in the community through my knowledge of the humans services profession, my knowledge of the deaf community and my ability to communicate in American Sign Language.…

    Deaf Event Reflection

I arrived at seven and left at eight when the event ended. The event was for kids so there were at least ll parents and at least 15 kids so in total around 26 people attended the event not including me. The event was very different from what I was expecting. It was very entertaining and I liked how much the kids liked it. The event consisted of choosing a book and then a person would start reading it to the children. I say reading it but it was more like a play, it was very engaging. I felt out of place at first seeing as the event was for children but I did try to stay out of the way. I was not as nervous to attend this event compared to the first one because this one did not have me trying to converse with someone. All I had to do was watch someone read a book to the children. Out of all three events this is the one that I most enjoyed because it made me see a different side to ASL culture. I liked how it felt like a skit, it made reading with your voice seem dull. Overall this one did not really require me to sign to others but it did allow me to see how a story would be told from a deaf persons perspective. It was a good view into deaf culture. The event did include deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing children so the greeting were from saying hi to waving. The leave takings were waving good bye, hugging good bye, to see you…

The kids’ reaction to the story was as expected. Seeing as the kids were very young, mainly around the age of 5, they were very interested in the story because it had lions in it and were shocked the lions did not eat Daniel. They asked many questions afterward like why didn’t the lion eat him, so there was much I had to explain but I was not as nervous explaining it as I was reading it. All in all I think the story went very well and don’t think my nervousness was very noticeable. I could not really prepare for it seeing as I just read a story but I think I need to work on not psyching myself out before presenting. I communicated well with the kids and had a good time in the end. I would and am probably going to do this again within a few weeks because I might start to help out at the church. The outside speech was a great learning experience that I think is definitely crucial in the overall improvement and curriculum of speech class.…

My experience was developed based on the ways that these presenters gave topics and what their topics were about. This allowed me to be engaged from the beginning and gaining new insights on new topics I have not focused on very much. I have never stayed involved in the being connected with all of the things that are going on in the community and the world things and sometimes this is not a positive thing. However, by not staying up to date, I thought the information that was presented by the speakers was knowledgeable and relatable to the lives of the students here at Indiana Wesleyan University. My experience was effected, similar to any presentation, by the way that topics and the way the speakers talked. I had two favorite topics and two topics that were not my favorite. Overall, my experience at the Senior Seminar Presentations was a pleasant time where I was able to learn new…

Multicultural day was very interesting and I was able to experience and learn about several different cultures. I saw a performance and speech about ancient Japanese martial arts also called kobudo. I also stopped to listen to three musical performances. I stopped in one classroom to hear about the Syrian crisis, which was extremely interesting and I’m very glad to have learned about it. The whole experience was very intriguing and very educational.…
