In the yearbook they see that he was part of the Dead Poet Society. When the boys ask him what the Dead Poet Society is, he responds by saying it’s a group of guys who go to a cave and recite poems.

The life lesson I choose was Carpe diem. It showed the boys to seize the day and to not let others tell you how to live your life. The boys accomplished this throughout the entire movie, but especially in the end when Todd stands up on his desk risking getting kicked out of the academy, to tell Mr. Keating that they were forced to say the things they did and that he was an excellent teacher who will not be

Plot: Commencing at Del Norte High School of a small town called Alberseque, five students began to involve themselves in scheming and plotting of a very twisted plan which backfired on them. The scheme slowly evolved after many conflicts between the students and their English teacher, Mr. Griffin, for various reasons such as marks or dislike of his teaching methods. Mark, who had failed the course and deeply loathed Mr. Griffin, brainstormed to kidnap and "scare" the teacher with the help of his friends, Jeff and Betsy. In desperate need of a distraction or diversion for this plan, Mark told his friend, Dave to ask the smartest girl in the class, Susan (who liked Dave) for help; she was expected to arrange a conference with Mr. Griffin on the kidnapping day. Although Susan didn't want to, she agreed for Dave's sake. On the day, they waited anxiously for Mr. Griffin to come from the conference. When he approached, the students (except Susan) bagged his head and drove him to a secluded area. After they arrived there, the teenagers pressed the teacher to beg for a release, but he refused; out of anger, they dumped his heart medication and left afterwards. A few hours later, Susan called Dave with guilt to bring Mr. Griffin back, but too late --- the teacher already died of a heart attack when they came. They immediately drove back to school and notified their friends. Mark declared that they went too far and it was time to destroy any clues and hide the truth. Meanwhile, Mrs. Griffin notified the police, who assumed her husband deserted her. To add onto that, Mark persuaded Susan into lying to the police (she was supposed to be the last one to see the teacher) that Griffin left with another woman (lying he was still alive). To destroy all possible clues, the teenagers got rid of the car and buried the body. Just then, someone reported finding Griffin's medication (with his name). The police went to the spot, found the burial site, and dug up the body. Meanwhile,…

In the film Dead Poets Society, this is displayed effectively in the teacher-student relationship, through which Mr Keating encourages his students to break out of the conformed nature of the school and develop their own individual way of thinking. Keating teaches his students the phrase “Carpe Diem,” meaning “seize the day,” urging them use every opportunity that life presents to them. Its repetition throughout the film highlights its significance in influencing the viewpoints and actions of the students. He constantly stresses to them to formulate an individual view on their learning and the world, for example, when he states “The world looks different from up here… Come see for yourself! ...you have to look at it in another way.” He expresses this idea through the symbolism of standing on a desk to see the classroom from a different perspective. Another key idea in his teachings is revealed through the quote, “Swim against the stream,” underlining the concept of breaking out of conformity. This idea is clearly revealed through the scene in which he asks the students to rip out the introduction of a textbook which teaches them how to read poetry, a direct representation of liberation from the school’s traditionalism. Keating’s influence proved to have challenged the student’s way of thinking, however, results in both positive and negative consequences. Todd ultimately finds his own voice in the final scene when he stands on his desk to support Mr Keating, whereas Charlie finds himself expelled due to his impulsive, rash actions. Thus a relationship in which one is influenced by a challenge of the conventional definitely gives rise to a new sense of…

Dead Poet’s Society was filmed through the eyes of transcendentalism using Emerson’s philosophy, as seen in Nature and “Self-Reliance;” and Thoreau’s philosophy, as seen in Walden. The film deals with a group of young men who attend a very strict boarding school and the English teacher who gives them a new perspective on everything. The damaging effects of conformity, beautiful sense of nature, and emphasis of simplicity and individuality are shown in many elements throughout Dead Poet’s Society and are ultimately highlighted by Emerson and Thoreau’s philosophies, making the overall concept of transcendentalism understood.…

There can be several meanings and lessons take from the monologue said by John Keating. Keating is portrayed by Robin Williams and he does a wonderful job. He starts off by saying that poetry isn’t written just to be cute. It has a deeper meaning. It can stand for so many things. John takes time to discuss the necessities of the human race. We need medicine to heal us, laws to keep us in order, business to keep us off the coach and engineering to advance us. He is saying that we stay alive for “poetry, beauty, romance [and] love.” John quotes one of Walt Whitman’s poems “O me! O life” to gather further meaning to what he was saying to the students. It’s almost like John is saying the answer to our lives and why we’re still going is poetry.…

In 1838, a man named Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote a poem called “A Psalm of Life.” Little did he know that over 150 years later a movie would visually capture the essence of his poem: Carpe Diem. In Dead Poets Society, the characters take on what it means seize the day but all react differently to the outcome. Although these two definitions of Carpe Diem differ, they both show what it truly means to seize the day.…

Its world is insular, that of the privileged white male who, if he is not already a scion of Old Money, will probably marry it. Dead Poets Society is a great film about a perfect teacher with unusual methods of teaching to a strict conservative and aristocratic Welton Academy in Vermont in 1959, where he once studied, and it is not difficult to guess, that it was he who created that very society at the time of his youth. The other characters are the boys, Neil Perry, Todd Anderson, Knox Overstreet, Charlie Dalton, Richard Cameron, Steven Meeks, and Gerard Pitts , who study in the college- one of the most prestigious secondary schools of America, which graduates are guaranteed to become the Ivy League university students, that is, the oldest and the most famous universities of the United States. Let the characters, by and large, are stereotyped, but this company has been established perfectly! A diligent student from not a wealthy family, a desperate daredevil, a demure with inferiority complex, a smooth nerd, a silent careerist, a lover of Sciences ... Take their extraordinariness: the school slogan in Welton academy is Tradition, Honor, Discipline, and Excellence, but the boys welcome Todd and mock the four pillars of excellence with a hushed chant of Travesty, Horror, Decadence, Excrement. Remarkable personalities, aren't they?…

“Most men lead lives of quiet desperation.” I believe that this means that people live a life that they do not want to live. They want to do something else with their time but they find themselves stuck because of peer pressure and/or parents. Take Neal Perry for example. His father wanted him to be a doctor and he planned his whole life out for him. And all Neal really wanted to do was act but his dad was totally against it and he found himself torn between doing what makes him happy and what his father wants of him. He was desperate for his dad approval. He begged and he pleaded to his father and when he had not gotten it, he took matters into his own hand, which truly was a tragedy. You can also take Todd Anderson as an example as well. Todd Anderson was a lonely child, he was awkward and painfully shy and he, too, was under pressure by his parents to be something else. He was being pressured to be just like his brother and go to college and be a lawyer. But Todd doesn’t want to be a lawyer, instead, he want to be a writer. But he doesn’t have the courage to tell his parents this out of fear of disappointing them. Both Neal and Todd want to be something that they’re parents would not approve of therefore they have to live this this life that they’re parents want from them but they don’t actually want it themselves. This hints the quote “most men lead lives of quiet desperation.” Mr. Keating was trying to tell the students that they have a mind of their own and that they should be able to think for themselves. He tell s them that they have to learn to think for themselves. He tries to get them to see things from different perspectives. He radiates non- conformity and freedom and he want his students to do the same, to not settle. That this is their lives and that they only live it once. He wants them to find their voice. He says, “The longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all.” He wants them to live the life that…

The movie was quite not new to me since I’ve watched it several times when I was still in high school during our overnight. But I must admit that the impact of this movie to me has never changed from the moment that I personally have watched it. It was a very realistic movie that touched my heart all over again. Indeed, when we are young we really are curious about things and would actually see for ourselves on something. Mr. Keating, the teacher encourages his students to take chances and think outside the box. He is an ideal teacher to me because his purpose of being a teacher is not just to teach them the concepts but to teach them something that could be use for their future. He inspires his students to explore new things for it is indeed in doing so that you get to explore yourself and know your capacities & limitations. Mr. Keating reminds me a lot of my math teacher way back in high school. He is also a very comic but a strict man. Since, I am really poor in math I really refused studying the subject. But when I met this teacher, my outlook towards the subject has changed. He made me realize that if you want to achieve something, you have to do everything that you can so that at the end even if you succeed or fail, you can proudly say that you did your best despite of and you’ll have no regrets. Also, he made me realize that grades are really not what matters most but what you have learned. We have to do our best in every thing that we do all for God’s greater glory. The movie is very suitable for us, teenagers since we are in the stage in finding out who we really are, what we really want and who we want to be. The movie encourages us to be the students who aren’t afraid of taking risks but at the same time with every action that we do we are responsible for it. Comes with the great power to choose for ourselves is also the great responsibility to act accordingly for the betterment of the…
