Dead Poet's Society
The movie, Dead Poets Society, has proven one of the teachings of G.W.F. Hegel that I've learned from my Philosophy class last semester--Poetry is the end of art because it is capable of communicating what is in our spirit and soul.

The line of Mr. John Keating, "We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for," emphasizes the point that poetry isn't just a literary form but it is something that is noble. Neil Perry has become passionate and energetic through poetry. He even appeared to be the leader of their generation's version of Dead Poets Society. He has also discovered through it the very thing that he wanted to do--to act. He even said, "Yes and acting! it's got to be one of the most wonderful things in the world...For the first time, I feel completely alive." Another big transformation that can be seen is that of Todd Anderson. Poetry has made him stand and walk out of his comfort zone. He has overcome his self-doubting attitude and his fear of reading in front of people. In the final scene, he showed his courage by being the first one to stand on his desk as a sign of his salute to Mr. John Keating who made a great impact on his life. On the other hand, Knox Overstreet was able to break the 'calmness' within him. Poetry set him on fire! Through it, he was able to make his deed feeling of affection to Chris. What happened to knox is almost the same with that of Charles Dalton. Poetry enabled Charles to show to a girl named Gloria the love that doesn't just touch the heart but also the soul. His poems made Gloria say, "This (poetry) is better than sex any day. This (poetry) is romance!" Lastly, I believe that poetry made Mr. John Keating (being the original member of the Dead Poets Society) go back to his Alma Mater and share to his students the passion that he has for

Belonging can forcibly act upon individuals, causing them to feel a loss of identity and relationships. They can feel isolated and segregated because of this force, unable to discover themselves as individuals. When belonging is externally forced upon them, it challenges their lives, causing various negative consequences. These negative consequences, in terms of loss of identity and relationships, are witnessed in the 1989 film “Dead Poet’s Society”, directed by Peter Weir, occurring because of individuals being forced to belong. This concept of belonging can be examined in reference to two primary characters of the film, Neil Perry and Todd Anderson. Both characters are forced to belong to their family structures and high expectations.…

Poetry is considered to be a representational text in which one explores ideas by using symbols. Poetry can be interpreted many different ways and is even harder to interpret when the original author has come and gone. Poetry is an incredible form of literature because the way it has the ability to use the reader as part of its own power. In other words, poetry uses the feelings and past experiences of the reader to interpret things differently from one to another, sometimes not even by choice of the author. Two famous poets come to mind to anybody who has ever been in an English class, Robert Frost and E.E. Cummings. Both of these poets have had numerous famous pieces due to the fact that they both captivate the readers attention and can even keep them intrigued in a piece long after their first time reading it. A line such as one of the most memorable lines from Robert Frost, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood” (1). Many recognize this line and many may have their own opinions on how to look at his poem ‘The Road Not Taken’. Another poem with a shared theme is E.E. Cummings poem “Anyone lived in a pretty how town” these two poems are very different in delivery and literary devises, but both have a common theme, a theme of how time goes on and the choices one makes, shapes who they become. This reoccurring theme is important because live doesn’t stop going it is a clock that will never stop ticking and every time the clock ticks we make a choice that shapes who we are and who we will be in the future.…

According to Wexler "It is difficult to imagine a world without movies, plays, novels and music, but a world without poems doesn 't have to be imagined." It is difficult to imagine such a thing but if we look closely we might find poetry in all of those places. Today 's society is a fast-paced one and the entertainers have adapted to this way of life. They make novels into short stories on film, leaving out critical parts in the novel, to appease our appetites for entertainment on a tight schedule.…

Dead Poet’s Society is a powerful film that explores how a group of teenage boys deal with traditional and disciplinary schooling. The film was directed by Peter Weir and is set at the conservative and aristocratic Preparatory Academy in Vermont in 1959. Dead Poet’s Society investigates how authority and control can be damaging to young people. This is demonstrated by the traditionalist nature of the school, its rules and teaching style as well as Neil’s over controlling father. In contrast, Mr. Keating uses his authority to teach the boys to be free thinkers and to be able to express themselves as individuals.…
