At the beginning of the 1st century C.E ., when Buddhism began to spread from India to China, it encountered mixed results. Many Chinese had accepted the practice of Buddhism and stood by its policies when others were penetrating Buddhism's absence from past beliefs and used it as a pushover for social and political problems. Still others stayed impartial, wanting to mesh the differences of belief systems in China to create a one of a kind Chinese culture. Documents 2 and 3 support the spread of buddhism in China, while documents 4 and 6 examined and dampened the spread of buddhism in china in the 1st century C.E., Documents 1 and 5 share both sides of the story, discouragements and encouragements of the spread of Buddhism in China, but equally share an understanding. It provides a third prospective. Documents 4 and 6 dismay the Spread of buddhism in china in the 1st century C.E. Document 6 suggest that the causes of multiple problems in the Chinese society was caused by buddhism. Since Tang Emperor Wu was the author he had a lot of influence on his society, even thought some people rebelled in prohibited acts. Document 4 looks at Buddhism as “a cult of barbarian people”, as Han Yu says. His position on the Tang imperial court spreads his beliefs in a non-controversial way through out China, though his and many others acts may vary in opinions.

Documents 2 and 3 support the spread of Buddhism in China in the 1st Century C.E. Document 2 includes how joining the buddhist religion brings peace and joy to their society. Although, Zhi Dun (author), is of the higher class of China and his documentation does not state that of the lower classes opinions. Thus, when invasion in northern China came from the nomads, Zhi Dun could have suddenly looked to Buddhism as the target of the foreign invasion, but did not. Document 3 encounters the views of anti-Buddhists with facts. Although, having the author be anonymous in this document is too difficult to distinguish, his role is in the slight upper class, like that of document 2.

Documents 1 and 5 share both sides of the story, discouragements and encouragements of the spread of Buddhism in china, but equally share an understanding. Document 5 creates a sort of compromise between the belief system conflicts in China. The authors desire wasn't to defend Buddhism, although he was a Buddhist scholar, which made trying to understand both sides hard. Document 1 lays down the morals, and principles to sustain a peaceful and civilized life, a Buddhist tradition. This document was worded as that of the sacred text, meaning most other Buddhists shared the same beliefs.

In China the spread of Buddhism began during the 1st century, there were many different beliefs and perspective that included many different responses.

    Documents 1,2, 3, and 5 can be grouped together because they all point out the reasons to support Buddhism. The Buddah (who was the founder of Buddhism) discussed “The Four Noble Truths” and that all things in life are driven by sorrow and passion. Because he is the founder of the religion, he obviously supports the traditions. Zhi Dun, an influential Chinese scholar in document 2 states the pleasures of Buddhism and encourages everyone to strive to reach nirvana. At a stressful when the Asian steppe nomads are invading Zhi Dun could have easily declared Buddhism a foreign scheme, but he chose to promote it instead. Because the government structure was weakening and everything the people were used to was falling apart they chose to turn to the new promising ways of Buddhism. Document 3 is similar in the fact that it is also written by a scholar. It also supports the ways of Buddhism and does it in an efficient logic based way. By answering direct criticism of its traditions the scholar comes across more persuasive to the people who have not yet decided whether they will support Buddhism or not. Document 3 proves that Buddhism will conflict with Confucianism because of its focus on each person individually. The “5 relationships of Confucianism” conflict with the self focus of Buddhism and this document takes the Buddhist side.     In documents four and six, we can see why some people’s responses were negative towards the spread of Buddhism. In document four, we are allowed to see into Han Yu’s mind, a Confucian scholar. He believed that Buddhism was a cult of the barbarian people and that it had several flaws. He criticized it because the Buddha’s teachings did not speak of ancient kings and his clothings did not conform to the laws. Although this may have been a baist opinion coming from a Confucian scholar, it provides some evidence showing that some people did not like the teachings of Buddhism. In document six, we can see how even the emperor thought Buddhism was causing problems.     to 907 C.E. was when scholars, leaders, and Confucian supporters addressed the impact, mainly the negatives, that Buddhism had on China. Being a Confucian scholar and official at the Tang imperial court, Han Yu very much discouraged the Buddhism beliefs. In the “Memorial on Buddhism,” in 819 C.E., he talked about how he thinks Buddhism is evil and he then brings up that fact that acts done by Buddhists, contrast with Confucius’ sayings. (Document 7) The Tang Emperor Wu himself also finds Buddhism to be evil and he believes it should be abolished, so that it does not continue to ruin the Chinese culture. (Document 6) However, a Buddhist scholar named Zong Mi pointed out that even though Confucius, Laozi, and the Buddha approach their followers and teach them differently, in the end all three beliefs have the same purpose.     Faxian wrote, “That they should go to India and seek for the disciplinary rules. [...] They passed through [...] and reached the emporium of Chang-yih. He is saying that he felt bad for the people who were hurt and they went to India to find who dealt them these punishments. When they got there, they saw how troubled the country really was. This shows that Buddhism threatened the Tang Dynasty’s rule because the spread of Buddhism lead to the corruption of the minds of Chinese population. Following constant routines (Buddhists following the commandments) can actually harm people. A girl in China asked her teacher why she was receiving bad grades in school even though she studied a lot, and her teacher said that it was because she killed somebody in her previous life. People get sucked into these philosophies that they begin to believe that their present state is affected by their past lives. Also, along with the corruption of the minds of the Chinese, the Buddha was deemed by the people of the Tang Dynasty to be unfit for a position in the palace. Han Yu saw Buddhism as evil. He wrote that, “The Buddha's manner of dress did not conform to our laws; he understood neither the duties that bind sovereign and subject, nor the affections of father and son” (Doc 5). He is saying that the Buddha did not follow the rules of dress which were different for each social class. Instead, the Buddha wore a robe. This angered the Tang Dynasty. They did not like that the Buddha was not following the rules of dress that had been placed since the rule of the Qin Dynasty.
