Civil War DBQ
African Americans had a very large influence during the time of the Civil War and shaped the course of the war by many factors. After the election and inauguration of Abraham
Lincoln, eleven states in the South seceded from the Union. Lincoln responded the South with the Civil War, and so the main focus, at first, were not the slaves. The North fought to preserve the Union, the South fought to preserve their states’ rights. Slavery helped the union win the war because of the amount of slaves that fought. After the Civil War, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were made. They also wanted to reconstruct their community after the war, starting with the education.
When the north and south fought in the war, the Union (North) had more people than the
Confederates (South) did. Thousands of black slaves fled when the Union entered the South.
They fled to the Union for protection, but also interested in fighting in the war. The African
Americans felt like they’re being wasted when Lincoln proposed the idea of having the Blacks resettle in a different country. The Blacks wanted to serve in the military and the free Blacks were very loyal, wanting to help their “suffering country”, especially with “one million freemen.”(B) When the Union army, led by Benjamin Butler, encountered fleeing slaves, Butler didn’t know what to do with them. Butler didn’t know what their status was and what he could do with them. He saw them ablebodied and may be useful to the Union in the war (A). The slaves didn’t really get enlisted and provided weapons until the passing of Lincoln’s
Emancipation Proclamation. The African Americans became a big part in the Union military

forces in the Civil War. Many African American troops won important battles, such as the battles of Charleston and Richmond. The New York Times talked about how “astonishingly” things had changed. Before the war, “the American race.....were literally hunted

They had to actually fight for the right to serve as soldiers. They did this because African Americans knew before the Northern and Southern whites that the Civil War was being fought over slavery. They needed the Union to win the war and they felt that, of the two sides, they would fare better under a Union government than a Confederate government. However, even as they were “allowed” to fight for their freedom, they were treated as inferiors and were even paid less because they were black.…

Throughout the duration of the Civil War, African Americans too contributed to the fight against slavery, other than fighting on the battlefield. One way African Americans in the south contributed to ending slavery was sabotaging the plantations. This impacted the south’s industry and economy largely because the Confederacy was already at a disadvantage and low on resources due to the Union blocking their means of trade. To continue, when their local supplies were harmed, the south ran lower on the materials needed to continue war. In addition to sabotaging plantations, African Americans, mainly enslaved African Americans, created a slave resistance. This slave resistance helped in gradually weakening the plantation system, a system the the…
