David Shannon Research Paper
Fifty-seven year old, David Shannon was born on October 5, 1957 in Washington, D.C. Shannon now lives with his wife, Heidi, and daughter Emma in Los Angeles. Shannon grew up in Spokane, Washington and attended elementary school at Hutton elementary where he discovered his passion for drawing. At the age of five, David Shannon wrote and illustrated his first book, No, David! Later, Shannon majored in illustration at the Art Center College of Design. Afterwards, Shannon moved to New York City to become involved in editorial illustration. Magazines, newspapers, book jackets, and posters are among the few places where David’s work first appeared. Julius Lester’s, How Many Spots Does a Leopard Have?, is the first book illustrated by Shannon. After being encouraged to write his own stories to go with his pictures, Shannon’s first book, How Georgie Radbourn Saved Baseball, was later named a New York Times best illustrated book. David Shannon has written and/or illustrated over thirty-five children’s books.

In 1999, No, David! received the Caldecott Medal, his greatest award. The same book also was recognized as New York Times Best Illustrated Book, school library journal best book, and the American Bookseller pick of the lists. In 2001, The Rain Came Down, received the Golden Kite Award for Picture Book Illustration. How I Became Pirate, was awarded Book Sense Book of the Year Award: Children’s Illustrated in 2004.
