David Dinkins Tragedy
On January 1, 1990 David Dinkins was sworn in as the 106th mayor of New York. He was the first African American mayor for New York. This was important at the time because New York City was racked with racial tensions and crime statistics rose while he was in office. When he won he ended Edward Koch's bid for reelection for a fourth term. Dinkins won against former U.S. Attorney Rudy Giuliani. Due to a recession Dinkins could not do many of the plans he wanted to instill as mayor. Dinkins reduced crime a great deal but never got reelected.
On March 24, 1990 a 987 foot oil liner named the Exxon Valdez ran aground spewing 11 million gallons of crude oil into the Prince William Sound. The Exxon Valdez gutted herself on the Bligh Reef. No lives were lost were lost in the accident but four lives were lost in the cleanup. Because of the remote location people can only get to by air or sea made response to the accident difficult. This also had an impact on the economy. About $2,673,000 worth of oil was spilt and an Anchorage Judge allotted $287 million dollars to the cleanup. So nearly $5,962,000 was lost/spent. The oil also destroyed the ecosystem. Large amounts of herring, salmon, and halibut were killed.

A leaking gas cylinder in the train set off a fire and left 80 people dead and injured at least 65 more people. The fire started at 9:30 a.m. Firefighters extinguished the blaze but the fire was so hot that no one could enter the area for half an hour afterwards. S. K. Sharma, the top civil administrator in the region, stated after the accident that a cylinder of oxyacetylene gas, used in welding, was discovered in one of the cars.
