“Inventory - Oh, so sweet – It’s what it’s all about!” David Berman, founder and general partner, Durban Capital L.P., explaining his investment strategy in retail stocks

April 11th, 2005

David Berman reviewed the macroeconomic numbers on inventory turns as he prepared for his regular appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” as a morning co-host. A leading expert on “consumer related” stocks, Berman and his colleagues including portfolio manager Steve Kernkraut, a seasoned retail executive and analyst, were frequent contributors to various TV shows. On April 4th 2005, Fortune magazine ran a story on Berman called “King of the Retail Jungle”, and on December 13th, 2004, Barron’s ran a story called “Smart Shopper” where Berman’s four stock picks as identified, appreciated 30% on average over the next quarter. “Off air” he was a fund manager as well as founder and president of Berman Capital (which managed proprietary funds) and founder of and general partner in New York-based Durban Capital, L.P. (which managed outside and proprietary capital). Glancing at his notes on macro trends in retail inventory turns, Berman wondered if he should talk about his impressions on the show.

Berman held a bachelors degree in finance and masters equivalency in accountancy from the University of Cape Town in South Africa. He had also passed the South African chartered accountant and the United States CPA examinations. Berman obtained his CPA qualification in California while an auditor for Arthur Andersen and Company where he examined the financial statements and operations of a number of retail clients. He had been the auditor of Bijan, the notable men’s upscale clothing store on Rodeo Drive and 5th Avenue. Prior to starting his own funds Berman worked as a portfolio manager and analyst primarily at

From the trend analysis we preformed for both Macy’s and Dillard’s we can gather that both companies have managed to improve their return on assets, return on equity, and price to earnings within the 2014-2016 time frame. Although, both companies may have developed in those areas they did seem to differ in their progress on their inventory turnovers and accounts receivable turnovers. Macy’s struggled from 2014 to 2016, with inventory turnover and accounts receivable turnover dropping a considerable amount each year. In comparison, Dillard’s inventory turnover increased over time. Dillard’s accounts receivable turnover fluctuated from 2014 to 2015 dropping by a minor amount, but it once again advanced in 2016 over both the 2014 and 2015 amounts.…

Michael Bornstein experienced a life much different than ours. He suffered, persevered, and overcame all the obstacles that stood in his way. When he began his lecture, he talked about his story, and his family’s story. He was born in the ghetto around 1940 and only knew a life after war. His dad was an accountant, and his mom and grandma had little to no education. During his beginning of life, the ghetto (Zarki) was changing from an community to a close community. The dad was the president of a Jewish committee but was also the in between person with the police. As the ghetto became stricter the dad would collect money to hand out 600+ visa’s to save lives of the other Jews, and would bribe other officers to stop sending people to death camps.…

    Value Chain Concept

Before major transformations in the last two decades, Dollar General stores had followed a pack-away strategy to store all unsold seasonal merchandise for the following year. Since most stores only consisted of about 6,900 square feet, small back rooms piled up quickly with inventory causing overflow in some stores. Focus of managers was on how to keep the rooms organized with irrelevant product rather than operational activities that involved staff and the customers. Managers minds were also clouded with how to get the seasonal SKU’s into the hands of the customers. Dollar General was able to evaluate this strategy and notice that the focus on the back rooms and no room for extra inventory could erode the value the customer receives from shopping in Dollar General. Dollar store could potentially lose space for its core category products that initially attract the consumers. In the video “Keeping the Supply Chain Moving,” a shoe store is featured in which the layout also suffered from a tiny back room. (CFIRE) The owner was often unable to provide certain shoe styles to her customers due to inventory pile up in her back room. Value is lost.…
