Book Review of Dark Eden: Fear is the Cure
New York Times Bestselling Author Patrick Carman lives in Walla Walla, Washington and has written several books and series, including Dark Eden: Fear is the Cure. Fear is the Cure is the first book in the mystery, sci-fi, romance series, Dark Eden. Carman titled the series Dark Eden because this book, and I’m guessing the others, take place at a fort called Fort Eden, located far out in the woods. In this story there are seven teens, and those are the seven who go to the fort to get cured. Each teen that is at the fort was sent there by their counselor, Dr. Stevens, because they have an irrational fear; the counselor feels this is the last hope they have of being cured.
The main character is probably Will Besting, the boy telling the story about his and his friends’ stay at Fort Eden. Will is fifteen and does not like going to therapy all that much. Will took a flash drive to therapy every time he went because Dr. Stevens recorded all their sessions and saved them on the computer. At first, Will just copied his own files. But after Will finds out there are six more people like him, he starts taking their files and listening to them too. The day that they all leave for Fort Eden, we meet the six side characters: Ben Dugan, Kate Hollander, Alex Hersch, Connor Bloom, and Will’s crush, Marisa Sorrento.
All seven teens do get cured, but there is a catch, and Will is the only one aware of the catch. Mrs. Goring is the maid at the fort, and she tells Will about the catch by taking Will’s recorder and telling him. Mrs. Goring knows about the catch because she has suffered living with Rainsford, the man responsible for curing the teens. Rainsford is not curing them to be helpful, but for his own benefit. While Marissa and Will do end up together like Will had always dreamed of, the story might or might not end well.
