Danny Devito's Techniques Used In The Film Matilda
What techniques does the director, Danny DeVito, use in the film Matilda to illustrate that the character, Jennifer Honey, is benevolent (kind) and sweet? The film ‘Matilda’ directed by Danny DeVito, released in 1996. DeVito uses techniques such as high camera angles, high key lighting and soft sounding music. These techniques used for Miss Honey makes her seem very nice, sweet and approachable. Firstly, Miss Honey appears to be an approachable, bright, friendly teacher. In the first scene that we see Miss Honey, she looks bright, smiles a lot, has light make-up and has bright coloured clothes. Also the setting of her environment has lots of flowers which makes it very bright and natural. Within the movie, Miss Honey is always putting herself at the same height as the children, DeVito does this so it seems as if she is no better than the children. As we see in the first scene with Miss Honey, she is crouched at the level of the young girl whilst taking her braids out for her. Miss Honey is mainly in bright, natural lighting with colourful posters, decorations around her making the scenes with her feel very calm, happy and nice place to be. The only time Miss Honey is in a dark environment is when she is in Ms Trunchbull’s office. Also Miss Honey has flowers everywhere, on her dress, in vases and as decorations around the class. It is evident that Miss Honey is a bright, kind person as her classroom is very colourful and decorative.
