Dangers Of Drinking And Driving
Drunk driving is one of the fastest growing problems in the United States. Statistics show that 31 percent of accident-related crashes were due to alcohol in 2013. 10,076 people died in alcohol- impaired accidents that number has increased over time. Most people are arguing that there are reasons why someone may drive drunk so that also gives a person the right to take someone’s life, and we should not be fine with that. There should be no exceptions, and we need to do put a stop to it once and for all. Harsh punishment should be put in place for those who break the law. Rules are put in place to help us stay safe. How many people need to die before we get it into our heads that drunk driving needs to be stopped? Because of Statistics we collected over the years we should impose stronger rules to decrease the likeliness of drinking and driving …show more content…
what effects does alcohol have on a person’s body? First off, alcohol is a depressant. It slows down a driver’s nervous system, making it harder to process information and slows someone’s reaction time. Alcohol affects the frontal lobe, which affects your motor neurons and cerebral cortex. Damage of your frontal lobe, means every good judgement is instantly thrown out of the window. “A drunk driver with executive dysfunction may not be able anticipate and plan for the future, making the associated decisions,” explained Ester M. Nakamura, at the Federal University of Espirito Santo in Brazil. Impaired drivers may be unable to solve problems, even simple ones, and have difficulties focusing their attention or concentrating on something. The damage of the frontal lobe is the key point in alcoholism and drug abuse, yet many gaps still remain regarding our understanding of this disorder, says Nakamura-

The fact that so many people die every day in the United States from alcohol related accidents is absolutely ridiculous. The stories are endless. In Steve Schmadeke’s article, “Man gets 15 years in DUI accident that killed mother, son” He talks about the terrible tragedy that ended two innocent lives. Schmadeke states, “A speeding, unlicensed driver who crashed into another car on the Northwest Side, killing a mother and her teenage son and injuring three other children, was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison” (Schmadeke 1). Because 37 year old, Richard Strum decided to drive while intoxicated, he took two innocent lives and injured three others. He not only took a mother, but he also took a daughter, sister, and wife. He not only took a son, but he also took a brother, cousin, best friend, student, and ultimately someone who didn’t even have a chance at real life before it was taken away.
