Dangers of Alcohol and Addiction Among Teenagers Underage drinking and addiction have become one of the largest social issues among teenagers in America today. Although more than half of high schoolers drink and do drugs on a regular basis, the problem is that they are not aware of how dangerous alcohol and drug addiction can really be. The reality is that drugs and alcohol are often the cause of many problems among teenagers, they ruin the lives of teenagers, and are now the most serious problems among teenagers. Alcohol and drug abuse is a leading cause of teen death or injury related to car crashes, suicides, violence, and drowning.

Underage drinking is also a major factor in fatal car accidents and according to statistics e ach year, almost 2,000 people under the age of 21 die in car crashes in which underage drinking is involved. Not only is alcohol involved in nearly half of all the violent deaths involving youth, but it decreases teens’ abilities to pay attention and have difficulty with memory.Drinking alcohol can also alter the brain development and cause lingering cognitive defects. Also teens who drink are more likely to engage in sexual activity, have unprotected sex, have sex with a stranger, or be the victim or perpetrator of a sexual assault. The changes in the brain interfere with the ability to think clearly, exercise good judgment, control their behavior, and the teens may not feel normal without them.

Underage drinking also lead to a rise in the suicide rate among teenagers and according to statistics more than three times the number of eighthgrade girls who drink heavily said they have attempted suicide compared to girls in that grade who do not drink. Drug use can cause or mask other emotional problems, like anxiety , depression , mood swings, or hallucinations (for example, hearing or seeing things). Either of those illnesses can result in death by suicide or

There are countless facts and statistics on the dangers of drinking and driving and the effect it has had and is continuing to have on society. Drunk driving is blight on our civilization. “An average of 17,000 individuals die each year in drunk driving related deaths” (Injury Prevention). The fact that there are so many alcohol related deaths is beyond me. Someone’s life should not be taken due to the carelessness and irresponsibility of another human being If someone is going to consume more alcohol than the legal limit then they should not be anywhere near any working motorized vehicle. Not only for the safety of those around them, but also for the safety of the intoxicated person themselves. Drunk driving is an enormous public safety issue, which can cause more deaths around the world. “The highest drunk driving rates are from the ages 18 to 25” (Top). Considering the legal drinking age is set at 21, there should be no reason why there is alcohol related accidents caused by those under the age of 21. Alcohol can cause adolescents under the influence to drive more aggressively and thus more dangerous. Alcohol slows down their reaction time and causes them to be less likely to prevent…

Countries that have a lowered their drinking age have uncovered the impacts of this decision. A study that took place in New Zealand, “ found that 18 or 19 now face a higher risk of being involved in alcohol- related crashes that cause death or injury” ( Griggs 3), lowering the drinking age could cause a higher risk for car accidents.
