Danger of Food Additives
Why should people avoid consuming food with artificial additives?
Communication 103-816
December 9, 2013

I. INTRODUCTION: Have you ever looked at the back of food packages and wondered what those long named ingredients listed are or what they even mean? Personally, most of the time I do not even know what half of those big words are or sometimes I do not even bother to look at the ingredients list. Well, all these big, complicated words are fancy names for the additives that the manufactures use to increase the shelf life of the food, to enhance the flavor and color of the food and for many other reasons. There are two types of additives, natural and artificial. Natural additive come from natural sources while artificial additives are made synthetically. Busy lifestyles have forced people to buy more processed foods with have all these additives. According to an article by PBS, Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation: Why the Fries Taste Good (Excerpt), about 90 percent of the money that Americans spend on food is used to buy processed food. Well today I am going to talk to you about why people should avoid consuming foods that contain artificial additives and then I am going to provide you with some solutions to how you can do that.
II. BODY: Problem
A. Everything is artificial.
1. In older days, fruit flavored really meant made from real fruit.
2. According to an article by Los Angeles Times, Fake blueberries abound in food products, written by Shari Roan, Kellogg's Frosted Mini Wheats Blueberry Muffin that claims to have blueberries actually has no actual blueberries instead it has blueberry flavored crunchies made from the sugar and dye.
3. There are artificial foods like this that we eat every day that aren’t healthy for us with no benefits to us, just harm.
B. Food additives lead to many health problems.

    The book I chose to read for my summer homework was In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. Pollan has written many books regarding what to eat and how the foods we consume affect us.     As children we often have no say in what we choose to eat. We were always taught to eat the food that was given to us on our plates. It’s not until we reach adulthood that we make conscious decisions on what we choose to consume. As adults we seem to indulge in the foods that make us happy, as well as the foods that will take the least amount of time out of our day to day schedule. Eating is an activity that we as humans do at least two times a day. We live in a world where the variety of food is immense, and we are responsible for what we eat. We choose what we would like to eat and how it will affect our bodies. The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast the differences between eating fresh foods instead of canned foods. There are many different reasons to keep in mind when choosing canned or fresh foods, such as flavor, health benefits, accessibility and cost. The most notable difference between these two kinds of foods is their flavor. Fresh foods have great flavor and taste because they keep all their natural conditions. Nothing is added or taken away, just the simple taste that nature has provided. Canned foods however, lack a lot of its flavor characteristics due to the fact that there are chemical products added to the natural foods. It’s logical that fresh foods will have a greater taste and flavor when consumed, just because of the time in which they have been prepared. Comparing both types of foods we notice another difference, there is a health factor that affects both of them. Canned foods lose some of the original fresh food nutrients when stored, and also it has to be tinned with many conservatives and chemical factors that prolong the shelf life. In some instances, apparent freshness of the food could also become toxic if consumed too often. Yet another difference between these two types of foods is the cost and accessibility.
