“Dana Gioia is a prominent advocate for the restoration of meter, rhyme, and traditional formal structures to American poetry” (Muratori). He is considered to be one of the best known poets affiliated with the New Formalism movement. This movement emphasized traditional poetic techniques as well as narrative and non-autobiographical subject matter. Gioia is an essayist, critic, translator, cultural commentator, and a librettist. It was his poetry and prose that he first began to gain national attention and fame in the early 1980s, frequently appearing in journals and magazines like The Hudson Review, Poetry, and The New Yorker. Gioia also wrote a number of essays and book reviews around the same time. He has received numerous awards including 10 honorary doctorates, the 2002 American Book Award, and the 2010 Laetare Medal from Notre Dame. Dana Gioia was born on December 24, 1950 in Hawthorne, California, the son of Michael Gioia and Dorothy Ortez. His other brother, Ted Gioia, is a jazz musician. He grew up in Hawthorne speaking Italian in a Mexican neighborhood. He attended Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, California. Because of his multicultural background, he picked up languages easily. He spent his college years in Vienna, Austria, where he became fluent in German. (Dana Gioia, Newsmakers). After Dana obtained his B.A., M.A., and M.B.A., he joined the General Foods Corporation from 1977-1972 where he rose to the rank of vice president. “He was on the team that invented Jell-O jigglers. He is also credited with reversing a long-running sales decline for Jello” (Dana Gioia, Wikipedia). He resigned in 1992 to become a full time writer. After General Food, Gioia served as vice president of the Poetry Society of America from 1992-1997. He has published four full

“Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.” Allen Ginsberg believed this wholly and based his means of poetry by what he said in this sentence. One cannot censor thoughts, just as one can’t censor expression. Ginsberg faced controversy for sexual content and profanities that he used in his poetry, but those were merely his private thoughts that he brought to the public. His poetry fueled a whole generational revolution in the 1950s. In times of cookie cutter uniformity Allen Ginsberg went against norm and wrote explicit poetry for the sake of expressing a counter-culture point of view. The way he used inappropriate language and sexual content was his weapon against the institutions of the time. He performed live readings that captivated and roused the crowd. Ginsberg did not write his poems for public approval, his poem “Howl,” in particular received bad press. The press bad or otherwise only added desire to read this poem (“Allen Ginsberg.”). The explicit language and sexual content Ginsberg used in his poetry was meant to start a revolution of sorts and many thought it did. It questioned the preconceived concepts society had been accepting, such as consumerism, a close-minded view on sexuality, and an intolerant stand on drug use. Many said that the crudeness of his poetry was unnecessary, but it can be argued that his uncensored expression was the basis of his genius.…

Arguably the most popular poet in America, Billy Collins provides readers with two types of poetry that is nothing like typical poetry. One of his unique styles is writing as if the poem could be read like a novel. The other type brings humor and whimsy to his work, yet he hints at a seriousness that lies beneath the surface. Both styles of poetry are easy to read, but take a second look to realize what the Collins is intending the reader to understand. Billy Collins is an exceptionally talented poet whose writing at first can be taken to be a simple comedy but when read more carefully, it can be interpreted as a far more complex script. First readings of the poems I Chop Some Parsley While Listening To Art Blakey's Version Of Three Blind Mice, Victorias Secret, and Shoveling Snow with Buddha might convince the reader that Collins is offering poems that are clever yet easy to read and understand. A quick reading of Collins poems shows a similarity of his witty style, although the subject matter of each is different.First glance readings of these poems might lead readers to the following interpretations. A man wasting his time flipping through the pages of a Victorias Secret magazine. A man shoveling snow from a driveway with Buddha. Lastly, a man daydreaming about the childrens rhyme Three Blind Mice. However, if these poems are read more carefully they reveal a hidden richness in their meanings. In the first reading of the poem Victorias Secret, the narrator is flipping through the pages of a lingerie magazine. He describes the outfits of the eight models in great detail. For example, wearing a deeply scalloped / flame-stitched halter top / with padded push-up styling / and easy side-zip tap pants. Also, the narrator evaluates the mood of each model by the expression on her face. For instance, looks at me over her bare shoulder, / cannot hide the shadow of annoyance in her brow. None of the models in the photographs seem to like narrator looking at…
