Descriptive essay: DALAT (Vietnam) Have you ever heard about the "City of thousands of pine trees" or the "Little Paris"? Do you know what they are? They are ways to call Dalat, which is the capital of Lam Dong province in Vietnam. So why did people call Dalat under those names? Dalat city is located 1500m above the sea level on the LangBiang Plateau in the southern part of The Central Highlands. It is a symbol of Central Highlands, known as "City of thousands of pine trees" due to its specific sights which are pine with twisting road and tree marigold blossom in the winter. Dalat was developed as a tourist destination after Yersin, who discovered it in the late 1890s, persuaded the French colonial administration of its value as a highland resort. Because of that, many visitors called it "Little Paris." Moreover, the city's temperate weather stands in contrast to Vietnam's other climate and mist covering the valleys almost year-round leads to its name "City of eternal spring." Dalat especially attracts to tourists by its imposing topography. The terrain is classified into two distinct types including lowlands and mountainous areas. the lowlands have a shape of a basin, having hills with rounded peaks and steep slopes. The rounded peaks of the hills here have relatively equal height and the steep slopes are toward the Xuan Huong Lake, and rise progressively higher toward the surrounding mountains. The mountainous areas are distributed surrounding the highlands. They are always wrapped by dense mist which creates a vaporous and poetic scene. The high mountain ranges look like a windscreen belt cover for the central basin. To the north, the LangBiang range appears as a wall cover around the city. To the south, the mountainous terrain transits to a lower level, especially the Prenn area, with high mountains alternating with deep valleys.
