The Great Gatsby is a renowned American novel that creates a lasting, enduring impact on those who read it. F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author of this novel, captured the very essence of American society during the roaring twenties within this novel. He was able to reveal the corruptness of the rich and show the stark differences between the upper and lower classes of society. The novel represented the major theme about the American Dream that is achieved through hard work in order to obtain a lavish lifestyle. In this novel of material excess and extravagance, Daisy Buchanan is a static character whose traits are shown through indirect characterization.

For example, a quote from the novel says, “Suddenly with a strained sound Daisy bent her head into the shirts and began to cry stormily. ‘They’re such beautiful shirts,’ she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. ‘It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such, such beautiful shirts before,’” (page 87). From this quote, it reveals that Daisy gets upset over Gatsby’s shirts which is something very superficial. Furthermore, it shows that Daisy is a feeble character who cares only about material things in life or is covering up her true feelings. She could be dancing with the idea that an affair with Gatsby would benefit her only because of his money and not for truly wanting to be with him. In another quote, it explains, “She was appalled by West Egg, this unprecedented ‘place’ that Broadway had begotten upon a Long Island fishing village--appalled by its raw vigor that chafed under the old euphemisms… She saw something awful in the very simplicity she failed to understand,” (page 98). Daisy does not enjoy herself at Gatsby’s party because of the prejudices that she possesses about West Egg. Because West Egg consists of the newly rich, Daisy feels as though she is superior over them. The newly rich of West Egg disgusts her, because she is convinced that they are not as worthy to have such money.
