Should Music Be Censored?
“America- It’s a free country. Part of that freedom is the right to listen to the music you love. But music can hurt, too. Some songs have lyrics that put down different races or groups. Some songs celebrate drugs and violence. What happens when music offends?” Music has always been a basic form of expression. From Antonin dvorak, to Eminem, to even ancient, tribal music, it has been a way through which individuals convey their thoughts and expressions. Everyone has the right to listen to what they want as long as they do it with consideration to others. Everywhere we turn, everything we do and say is being scrutinized, no longer are we all allowed to think freely, openly. All the censorship out there is a way of stopping our right of free expression because it doesn’t fit their description of what is decent and moral. What they fail to realize is that we all have our right to be free as long as no one is being out in danger, and I don’t think music has ever hurt anyone. Music shouldn’t be censored. Music has often been the release for some of our most troublesome times. If you are angry or sad, you go home and out on a song that relates to your feelings, making you feel better. You are free to choose what you want to listen to, which the first amendment guarantees. Also 65% of people in our community like music. There is a huge number of people who enjoy listening to music. Eventually, people listen to music while walking home, work, while there are on the bus, or driving, also even when cooking, or just to relax. Why should we take away something people really enjoy doing? To add up, due of the amendment made by our founding fathers, I do not believe there will ever be an answer to the question whether or not music should be censored. The way I see, it should not be censored. Unfortunately, many children often hear explicit language from older siblings or parents at an early age. They believe that since someone they look up to uses those words, they should too. Eventually, everyone will be exposed to language they do not find acceptable. Foul language is not permitted on media such as television or radio because it is an all audience media. However, on albums the artist is allowed to use any words he or she sees fit. Freedom of speech is the basic way for communication of beliefs, thoughts and ideas. Also, as this quote says (by the poet: john hames) ; “The words sound so simple, but without them the world would be a very different place.ʺ Without the right to speak one’s mind freely, people would be forced to agree with everything society stated. Without freedom of speech there would be no interesting newspapers, no free religion and no free thoughts. Besides, music is just a way that people use to express themselves, no one gets hurt with words. What is legal and illegal? What can be said and cannot said? Does the first amendment include spoken word only or does it includes actions also? What, if any, limits should be put to this amendment? As long as the government has existed, people have battled over censorship. Censorship takes on all different shapes and forms: banning of books, television guidelines, or the bans of teenagers in stores. Censorship is all around us, but are we going to let them take music away from us? No we are not, music should not be censored; we all have our freedom to speech; we all can express ourselves openly; we are free, and I truly believe that we are free to fight for what we enjoy to listen to. Finally, there are many reasons why music shouldn’t be censored. We all are free, and no one is willing to give up their freedom of expression. Our founding fathers gave us the freedom of speech, so by law, we have the right to listen to what we want. Music is just something we use to relax, to help us concentrate, to have a moment of peace, to enjoy a beautiful melody, to escape from all the loud sounds in the street to let your feelings out, to help you feel better. Censorship has always been an issue debated by people since a long time ago, this issue is very important in our society. Music shouldn’t be censored. I hope the reader take my point of view into consideration.

Imagine, if you will, a world where we are told what music to sing, what music to play, and even what we may listen to in the privacy of our own homes. That world already exists as a reality in more countries that you might imagine, and that very reality is knocking on our door: In the USA, lobbying groups have succeeded in keeping popular music off the concert stage, out of the media, and off of the shelves.…

Music is everywhere in our life. It's an important part of our culture. So why are music programs being cut from school? Music education may seem unimportant, but that is far from the truth. Music is important because the music taught in schools whether they are classical or fairly recent, help in learning as well! Music affects the brain to somehow learn faster and more efficiently. This has actually been done by physicist Dr. Harvey Bird from Fairleigh Dickinson University and neurobiologist Dr. Gervasia Schreckenberg from Georgian Court College in Lakewood. They used mice and a maze. They would have three sets of mice. One had to listen to voodoo music, the second had to listen to classical music, and the last did not have…

Boris Opening Statement- Censorship in music is a topic that has brought about much controversy in the past two decades. There have been many different arguments on the topic, however the question still remains as if it should be censored or it should not be censored. Before you can form an opinion on this, you must hear both sides of the argument on this much-debated topic. Some people believe that music should be censored so all audiences can hear it without it containing any controversial lyrics. Others believe it should not be censored and musical artists should be able to speak, sing, rap, or rhyme freely without anyone censoring them. Preventing speech is a clear violation of the First Amendment. When you really think about it, it is a violation of the First Amendment, which says: "Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of speech or of the press". The First Amendment guarantees the right to freedom of speech, and censorship is violating peoples' rights to say whatever they…

Many people may not know their rights as they are set forth in the Constitution. For those who do know all of their rights, many have not experienced the feeling of the government telling them that they cannot speak their mind. This is covered by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. It is the freedom of speech. There has been at least one major case where a rap group was ultimately censored by the federal government. Henry Louis Gates Jr. depicts a few aspects of this case with the reading “2 Live Crew, Decoded” (523). There can be nothing worse than being misunderstood because of the use of slang. The group was being censored during their performances for being too provocative. Ultimately the federal government began to censor their music (523-24).…

According to the First Amendment, artists should be protected by the freedom of speech which by law should protect the artist from any censorship. For example, if a rapper uses vulgar language in one of their songs and raps about fighting or killing their enemy, it doesn’t necessarily mean that whoever is listening will go out and commit a murder. If you’re an adult, you can’t blame a song or an artist for your actions. Whatever an artist says in their music isn’t mean’t to be taken verbatim, in most situations the lyrics are just for entertainment, nothing more. Most people that support the censorship of music are only supporting it for personal reasons. Most people are willing to give up their freedom of speech just because they don’t agree with 21 Savage’s views on religion and how he lived his life or how Lil Wayne chooses to be in a gang or smokes weed.…

Music carries many trends from generation to generation, but one of the oldest forms of censorship is what can and can’t be read on paper. Banned books are usually illegal because of certain information that could be a threat to someone or security. Censorship in today’s society can get out of hand real quick on both ends of the issue. It seems like there is always someone who is personally offended by something and tries to take whatever offended them away from everyone else. Then again, if there was no censorship, perhaps collective morals would cease to exist in society. What is not obscene to one person could very well be to another and that is one main reason why censorship does exist. However, that something is obscene to one person shouldn’t forbid another from seeing or hearing that form of expression if they want. Censorship helps gives the right to parents to raise their children in an environment in which parents feel comfortable and it helps parents decide what materials their children can be exposed to and what should be withheld. “We are living in a time when flowers are trying to live on flowers, instead of growing on good rain and black loam,” said Faber. What Faber is talking about is that censorship can also…

Music is a place in which many groups of people with different beliefs can put that aside and join. Censorship is simply ruining that. Even more so, it tells stories. People use music to relax and express one’s self as well as their culture. Take the Native Americans as well as Africans Americans for example. They are infamous in using drums to beat for entertainment at gatherings. Denying that music is not a form of popular culture in my opinion is asinine. Over the broad plans of the scorching hot plantations which the field workers in the 1600’s worked; under these extreme inhumane living conditions the slaves were subjected to, they would hum tunes that would get them through their times of atrocity and calamity.…

Musicians and their music relate to people especially youth(Noise Between Stations, 2). When someone like a teenager is still trying to find some sort of self-identity, music can help them determine what sort of beliefs they feel are right. If the music they connect to and base their beliefs off of is no longer available, then they have no source of backup for their beliefs. Not only do musicians write about such topics to teach, but it makes them more relatable, which benefits both the artist and the listener. These topics that they sing about may seem obscene, but they are just realities that make their music real(Noise Between Stations,7-8) When a musician tries to make their music real, it increases the satisfaction from the listeners, which fundamentally leads to…

If art is publicly funded, censorship should be allowed. Artists should be allowed to create anything their heart desires even if it offends people however, if their art is being funded by a public source the first amendment should no longer apply and the art should be created in a way that the general society sees fit and is not offended by. This is a matter of great debate and one of the biggest issues is who decides if the art is appropriate.…
