Cystitis is a chronic disease of the bladder that is caused by deficiencies in the lining of the bladder, which allow irritants in the urine to leak through the coating of the bladder into the interstitium where all the nerves and nerve endings are located. Cystitis is a common type of urinary tract infection (UTI) caused by bacteria call Escherichia coli usually it occurs when then urethra and bladder become infected the area becomes irritated and inflamed. Cystitis is common in both sexes and all ages. More commonly found in females than males. Cystitis most commonly develops in the bladder but can also spread to the kidneys. A diagnosis of Cystitis is the way to find out do to symptoms. A urine test can be done and sent to the laboratory or a dipstick can be used. In order to do the tests you need a “clean catch” (urine culture) or a catheterized urine specimen. Cystitis can be treated after they find out the bacteria that are involved in these diseases. Treatment can also be determined after they find out the bacteria and the symptoms and allergies to certain medications.

Women that insert tampons when they have their period slightly risk of inserting bacteria via the urethra. When someone that goes to the restroom and do not empty his/her bladder completely, are creating the possibility of bacteria to multiply in the bladder. This is slightly common among pregnant women or men whose prostates are enlarged. Cystitis can also be cause do to diabetes. Elderly people have a higher risk of having cystitis at nursing homes. Also when you stay still do to surgeries or injuries immobile for a long period of time you are more likely to develop cystitis because of not emptying your bladder
