1.1 Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults.

It is important to communicate with children in a way that is clear and appropriate to their ages, needs and abilities. When communicating with children it would be ideal to get down to the child’s level, to speak in an appropriate language that they understand, to approach the child calmly/quietly and to be mindful of their age. When communicating with adults, some good techniques to use would be to make continuous eye contact to show that you are taking interest in conversation, to be conscious of your body language, to be prepared to listen and to nod every now and then so that is acknowledges their attention.

It is also important that we are confident and have the ability to identify and sort out any conflicts with children, young people and adults so that others can trust us. Another principle would be being consistent and fair towards other people as they will at some point need to rely on us; this means to stay professional at all times. We should listen to children and hear what they have to say first before jumping to conclusions and to make sure that a child’s needs are taken into consideration first. Being fair is what adults need as well as children and young people. Staff members in school will need to feel that the workplace is a fair where everyone is the same and expected of as the same level of others and to always keep confidentiality as appropriate. It’s important to show respect and courtesy towards others as adults expect this and young children will need this so that they can extend their skills with
