1.1 A description of the social, economical and cultural factors that will impact on the lives of children and young people.

There are many social, economical and cultural factors that impact on the lives of children and young people. In my role as a Young Carer’s Support Worker, I work with a number of families living with the consequences of these factors. Every Child Matters (ECM) aims to improve the outcomes and life chances of every child and young person, therefore, it is important we understand and do all we can to help them achieve the 5 outcomes of the ECM, stay safe, be healthy, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution, and, achieve economic well-being.

Personal choice - Some families decide not to live or act in a way that is perceived as the “norm” in society. Personal choices can include, for example, being a travelling family. Living in a mobile home, moving from site to site around the country can impact on the child’s education as their schooling time is always disrupted. Some of the children may not even sit exams and marry young so they are forced to go out and support their family. A parent/carer who has an addiction to drugs or alcohol can impact severely on their child’s well-being. I work with a young person who’s father is an alcoholic, and the outcome of this has resulted in the young person looking after siblings and doing some household chores, lacking concentration at school because they are tired and constantly worried about their parent. Also, being around alcohol and drugs as a child may influence the child’s choices in adult life.

Educational Environment - Settings that do not meet the statutory requirements may affect a child’s development and potential. Some children may experience bullying at school which may lead to isolation, fear, upset and truancy, or the pressure of exams and deadlines may cause stress and worry so their learning will not be at their best.
