Cyclic Neutropenia Case
Cyclic neutropenia is a blood disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of abnormally low levels neutrophils in the body. Cyclic neutropenia is believed to be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. This trait causes impaired production and/or release of neutrophils. Neutrophils play a major role in fighting off infection by destroying bacteria that enter the body. The 6-year-old boy in this case scenario has several of the symptoms associated with cyclic neutropenia. The primary finding is the chronic decrease in neutrophils that recur every month and last for several days.
