cyber predator
Wising up to threat of cyber predators
As much as the internet has made a positive impact in most people’s lives, it has also made it easier for cyber predators to prey on children without parents knowing. Social media like Facebook is also struggling with ways to better protect children from such threats. So what is a cyber predator? A cyber predator uses the internet to cultivate relationship with victims and look for the right time to take advantage of them in anyway.

An example would be what had happened 2 years ago. It was reported that human traffickers were using Facebook to lure Indonesian teens and many of them were sold as prostitutes in Batam. With many households connected to the internet these days, activities such as chatting online and posting on social media are becoming popular with young people. Many of them are openly posting their mobile numbers and improper photos of themselves on Facebook.

So, there is a need for cyber safety and schools are already doing their part. Students at South View Primary rehearse situations they might face when they are befriended online. Community groups like Touch also have programmes for students and parents. Ultimately, parents and caregivers are the one to protect their children from harm whether if it’s online or offline.

Here are some tips to help parents guide children in using the internet. For instance, setting up of time limits on internet time to prevent addiction. Also, parents may install web filters to block access to inappropriate websites. Lastly, parents can become a friend of the child’s social media network. In conclusion, the online experience has changed childhood. It allows children to explore the life of the world but without proper precautions, it also allows the world to explore your child’s life. So educate yourself, educate your children. Invest in the necessary tools to make sure they are safe. Don’t let your family to be the next victim

Social-networks can cause harm to others especially when not knowing how to use them the correct way. Internet sites such as Facebook and MySpace make it easier for predators to stalk or catch their next victim. Marcia Clemmitt argues, “But as Internet socializing grows, so do fears that the practice exposes the vulnerable – especially young people – to sexual predators” (627). Marcia explicates that teenager’s lives are put in danger as the social web sites increase. A website like MySpace is dangerous to the youth because some do not know how to keep their life private. Some teenagers enjoy posting personal information online without knowing that they are at risk of being molested. Young people should be careful with what they post or share…
