INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE STUDY
Under the modern marketing concept all marketing activities have to centre the consumer. Effective marketing therefore requires a clear picture of the consumer characteristics. Hence, it is the duty of business concern to study such factors to understand the consumer’s preference.
Indian automobile industry is an ever growing industry. The industry has changed from being a seller’s market to a buyer’s market. Brand and media proliferation, information book and easy assess to a wide variety of brands, have all had a significant impact on the buying behavior of consumers, who are now clearly seeking value over price.
The problem of today’s business is no more on production area but only in marketing area. Marketing of products involves so many aspects including the study of consumers, their choice and preference and goodwill for their products in the market. An attempt to buy the products. However, it is true that there are number of factors affecting the buying behavior of consumers.
The purchase of action that is visible may be regret of interplay of a number of complex and hidden variables which may have influenced the ultimate purchase activity. The final purchase is just one activity in the entire series of physical and mental activities that may have occurred in this whole process. Because all these activities exert influence on the purchase they are considered a part of consumer behaviour.
Today’s world is subject to rapid changes in technology, consumer’s tastes are also characterized by fast changes. To survive in the market a firm has to be constantly innovating and understanding the latest consumer trend and taste.
The primary work of the business in the olden days was to concentrate only on production areas. But the trend today is totally different as the importance of a product is closely to its operation. In a competitive world a business, which pays little importance to marketing, can never

    Consumer behavior is defined in a variety of ways such as “the dynamic interaction of affect and cognition, behavior and environmental events by which human beings conduct the exchange aspects of their lives.” by the American Marketing Association. (2008). In a simpler form, consumer behavior can be explained as the actions of consumers and the different approaches a person may take to decide what to buy and the decision making process. The decision making process can be effected by many factors all related to a person or persons lifestyle. Determining that behavior can be confusing and marketers need to use research techniques to understand the consumer. Understanding the intent to buy, buying process and post purchase issues from a marketing perspective raises many questions and is an in-depth process. “The basic marketing concept hold’s that firms exist to satisfy consumers’ needs.” (2004, Solomon). Once that basic concept is understood, an organization can focus on key goals to achieve a competitive advantage. Marketing strategies are used to gain better understanding of the market, consumers, environment, supply and demand and competition. The behaviors of consumers such as personality, emotions, attitudes, learning style, and perception of the consumer helps companies design their marketing techniques. External influences are also need to be studied and factors such as culture and sub-culture, demographics, social status, and family structure helps understand the decision making process of the consumer’s behavior. For marketing strategy to succeed, the insight to the consumer’s decision-making process is a good starting point.…

The purchase motivations can be linked with the benefits of the product in the category of need. For example, if consumers’ purchase motivation is problem removal (bad smell from mouth) can be linked to the fresh mouth texture benefit for the toothpaste. In this study target audiences has been grouped into four categories. They are New Category users (NCU), Brand Loyals (BL), Brand Switchers (BS), and Other Brand Loyals (OBL). BLs are very important for companies’ profitability in the sense that the profit of a brand product does not come from the mass market but from the brand’s most loyal users – the relatively small proportion of the households that accounts for large percent of sales volume. Thus the company should concentrate on the BL customers. Normally the customers want some benefit from the brand products.
