Cursive Writing Persuasive Essay
Cursive writing has been in the educational system since the 18th century and was first taught in penmanship schools (Cohen 1). There are many articles and blogs on the internet explaining why we should or should not continue to teach cursive handwriting in schools. People who are opposed to teaching cursive hand writing may say that cursive is outdates or pointless or that we schools should spend more time focusing on teaching “more important” things. These more important things are basic handwriting and spelling. In the “digital age,” cursive is becoming less common. Those who are for keeping cursive handwriting in schools bring up the largest point that we sign our names in cursive. If someone signs their name in cursive, should others be able to read their name? Handwriting is important and must be able to be read by oneself other individuals. People need to be able to sign their names when and where needed. Although in today’s society, cursive is a rare writing form. With all the new communication-related technology that has sprung up in the last few decades, cursive writing is becoming less of a desired writing form. I am personally against the decisions made by educational departments to abolish cursive writing in the standards of elementary learning. I think that cursive writing should still be taught in schools as it has many advantages and is needed for some things in life. If someone received a letter one day that was written in cursive, and they could not read it as they never learned cursive, there would be a problem. Just like manuscript, cursive is another popular form of writing in the United States and therefore should not be abolished from the educational
