A: Jorge Heine, CIGI chair in Global Governance at the Balsillie School of International Affairs in Waterloo, Ontario, and a former Chilean cabinet minister and ambassador to India: "The last decade has seen a sea change in Indo-Latin American relations. The number of LAC embassies in New Delhi grew from 12 in 2003 to 18 in 2008, and the Indian ones in the region from seven to 14. While only 10 presidential visits from Latin America to India took place from 1947 to 2000, a dozen did so since 2000. Trade is one-tenth of that with China, but it may nearly triple, to $70 billion, in 2015, part of increased South-South trade and investment flows. Yet, many Latin American government officials and businesses remain fixated on China. They do not realize that, according to some projections, India's growth rate will overcome that of China by 2020 and India's population will be bigger than China's by 2030. The India-CELAC Dialogue could not be more timely. It joins Latin America's new regionalism with the new India. The larger countries are taking the lead, with Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Chile and Argentina at the…

    * At this time, the United States and India share several differences, but one in particular is that India does not trust the growing relationship between China and America. “Many in India believe that the Obama administration has tilted its policy toward Beijing in a way that undermines Indian interests. Given China's close relations with Pakistan and continuing claims on Indian territory, India does not view Beijing as an honest broker” (Feigenbaum, 2010, pp. 76-91). India’s concern, for instance, the U.S. will not help relieve India if tensions riled along the Chinese-Indian border (Feigenbaum, 2010).…

The island of Sri Lanka, situated in the Indian Ocean off the southern tip of India, is an exquisitely beautiful and spiritual place. Torture, rape and random killings have been perpetrated by the military and pro-government paramilitaries. Underpinning this war has been Western military aid and political support. This reflects Sri Lanka's strategic significance, but also that the military, political and theocratic elites that rule Sri Lanka maintain Western domination of the economy that still follows the colonial export-oriented model (FRONTLINE).…

For thirty long years Sri Lanka was torn apart by a malevolent war between the country’s majority and minority; a war that not only claimed the lives of many, soldiers and civilians alike, but also destroyed much property and dammed the country’s growth in uncountable ways. The whole of Sri Lanka grieved as one at all that was lost but it would not be incorrect to say that it was the north that suffered the most; it affected the education, economy, health, security, agriculture and overall the lives of the people of that part of the island.…

Although India and China had relatively little political contact before the 1950s, both countries have had extensive cultural contact since the first century A.D., especially with the transmission of Buddhism from India to China. Although Nehru based his vision of "resurgent Asia" on friendship between the two largest states of Asia, the two countries had a conflict of interest in Tibet (which later became China's Xizang Autonomous Region), a geographical and political buffer zone where India had inherited special privileges from the British colonial government. At the end of its civil war in 1949, China wanted to reassert control over Tibet and to "liberate" the Tibetan people from Lamaism (Tibetan Buddhism) and feudalism, which it did by force of arms in 1950. To avoid antagonizing China, Nehru informed Chinese leaders that India had neither political nor territorial ambitions, nor did it seek special privileges in Tibet, but that traditional trading rights must continue. With Indian support, Tibetan delegates signed an agreement in May 1951 recognizing Chinese sovereignty and control but guaranteeing that the existing political and social…

I being a citizen of an underdeveloped country and a member of a poor nation, have always wondered that why things in our country happen in a certain way? Why decisions and policies of our country are molded in a way which is unpopular among the people of our country? Why the developed countries like United States of America and United Kingdom have every right of interference in our country’s decision making? Why our politicians fear from the US embassy? And why telephone calls from the US and UK are so much important to our politicians and why their media is like “God” to us? On 16 of the march 2009, we had it straight from the US media that President Zardari, turned ‘soft’ only after the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, telephoned him. Sure enough the Pakistani president announced after the call that the government would move to ‘restore’ the judges removed by the military dictator, Pervez Musharraf.…
