Communication Technology Essay

Information and communication technologies (ICT) have noticeably shaped several aspects of our lives and contributed to major discoveries in science. While there are many benefits several factors are influencing negatively on ICT, therefore limiting its benefits and slowing down its reproduction. Lack of security awareness and training, perating system design and security, open source issues, design complexity and multiple layer approach are some of the current issues with ICT. These issues are likely to persist in the future because the technology is changing so fast and in different directions, difficulties in changing operating system design approach, product life cycles and software development issues.
There are many uses for communication technology today. Businesses use them everyday in the running of their business for example emails, internet sites and even video chat in many cases. Many businesses would find it hard to stay open without communication technology in today’s world. Promoters use communication technology in promoting their product or business on many sites such as facebook or twitter. Most people today use communication technology and would find it very hard to survive now without it. Adults and teenagers use mobile phones and internet sites everyday in their way of contacting people. Now more than 40% of adults and 60% of teenagers own a smartphone, more a hand-held computer than a phone. There are many advantages of Communication Technology. Firstly I find it very convenient-Through email, cell phones, social networking, chat rooms, web cams and Internet voice calls day to day jobs have become a lot more convenient. Instead of sending a letter and waiting days, or even months, for a response, emails provide instant answers. Software such as Skype enables you to make Internet calls for a lot cheaper than a land line. Chat rooms and text messaging allow you to communicate through typing and is a very fast process. Communication technologies are also quite convenient in emergency situations when you need contact with people asap. Another advantage would be Saving Money and Time-Communication technology has changed the way companies do business. It has shortened response times and reduced the costs of paper and phone bills. Costumer service has also changed. In many cases, you no longer have to wait for hours on a telephone; you can chat on-line with representatives to solve problems faster. Businesses now market their products and services through emails and texts. Businesses can even hold visual meetings on-line, from opposite parts of the world. It is easier to obtain Knowledge -Communication technology puts the world at your fingertips. You can now enroll in an online university or college, and talk with your professor through the internet. People are able to instantly pass on important information during emergencies and disasters.
Although there are many advantages to communication technology there are some disadvantages. Firstly it can be a distraction-As more students acquire cell phones, iPods, and gaming systems, technology's impact on effective communication is becoming more pronounced. As the District Chronicles reports, teachers attempting to convey messages about lessons and textbooks find students are texting, playing, or listening to music. It can also confuse language and the way we talk and write - With the growth and expansion of technology, a new language has been born, including a variety of abbreviations, such as, "lol," and "ttyl" While some of these terms have become very commonly used in day-to-day exchanges.
There is a great impact of communication technology on private and public life. Online communication brings families and friends together across distances. Skype for example allows you to see friends and family all over the world. There is a disadvantage to this as well as people can access your online account for example if your facebook page is not on private anybody can see your information and photos so you have to be very careful. Society is very dependent on technology these days. Most businesses use communication technology on a daily basis and would not be able to function without it. You could nearly say we are dependent on it.
There are a lot of Current Developments in communication technology. Windows 8 has currently been introduced. The main advantages of this are its; Speedy boot time, Innovative and dynamic desktop, Improved search function, Windows to go and Windows live syncing. Other developments in communication technology would be; Mobile phones, Computers, Emails and the Internet.
The Data Protection Act 1998 defines UK law on the processing of data on living people. It is the main piece of legislation that governs the protection of personal. It also requires companies and individuals to keep personal information to themselves. The HSA has an overall responsibility for the administration and enforcement of health and safety at work in Ireland. The HSA monitors compliance with legislation at the workplace and can take enforcement action. They are the national centre for information and advice to employers, employees and self-employed on all aspects of workplace health and safety.
