The internet is filled with information. Podcasts, videos, and blogs are the most used forms of information on the internet. Three factors that need to be used when evaluating internet sources for use in research are authority, can the speaker be authenticated, and is he qualified to speak on the subject, accuracy, can the information be found in other credible sources, and currency is the information current or when was the last revision to the page?     There is a wealth of knowledge and information to be found on the web and being able to judge the validity and appropriateness of a website can be very difficult. With the millions of great websites available to everyone there are just as many harmful and useless ones as well. Not all websites out on the web were created with innocent intentions but were created to harm, sell you something, give you false information, or express ones point of view. In the UC Berkley Library website "Evaluating Web Pages: Techniques to Apply & Questions to Ask," they provide a checklist for precautionary measures that you can take to ensure that the website you are on is a valid and appropriate source of information when researching. First, in the search results in the search engine you look at the URLs. Try and find information within the URL to see if it is someone's personal page, what type of domain, and who published it. Second, once inside the page selected to visit begin by scanning the page looking for links that may describe the sites content and what type of credentials the author of the site or page has. Third, UC Berkley recommends that you," look for indicators of quality information. Is the sources on the site documented with footnotes or links?" Is the sites information genuine and not incomplete? Make sure that it is not reproduced or altered information. Are there any other links for any other sources on the same subject? Lastly, you should try and see what others say about this site by simply seeing what other sites link to this page, do a link search in google or yahoo, or do a search on the author. These steps can greatly help you to evaluate the contents of a web page. It isn't by any means fail proof. There are a lot of web pages out there with inaccurate, malicious, and harmful content, but if you use these techniques it may help you to prevent from going to these types of sites and to visit the ones that are truly helpful and…

    It’s good to hear from you. You’re right to be fascinated about the internet; it can be a great tool. I use the internet nearly every day it’s like having a dictionary, thesaurus, almanac, encyclopedia, and library all rolled into one and open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The internet is a great tool however finding the information you’re looking for is like finding a needle in a stack of paperclips, lots of information that’s similar but not quite what you’re looking for it. The most common tool we use to find information on the internet is a search engine. Google has probably what many would consider the best search engine out there followed by one developed by Microsoft called Bing. Once you enter what you’re looking for into the search engine it will crawl through all the possible matches to your search and give organize them into the most likely matches starting with those with the highest probability of matching. Once you have this narrowed down list you have to vent the results for credibility. I try to find sources as close to the origin of the information as possible. I’ll go to manufacture websites, research firms, educational sites, government sites or anyone that has an established reputation that I can use as a point of reference. I try to avoid sites that are from free sources or open forums that allow for anonymous or guess. I generally believe that anything said by someone that doesn’t want to take responsibility for it shouldn’t be used as an informational source. It really comes down to common sense and if it sounds too good to be true it usually is. It also helps to know how to recognize rhetoric and bias information. Usually you can see a writers’ intentions within the first few posts or by checking out the links…
