Critical Thinking and Ethics
As I sit here thinking about critical thinking, I ask myself, what is critical thinking? My definition of critical thinking would be, to go into deep though about something that’s on your mind. I then though maybe you should look up the real definition of critical thinking. In doing that I came up with this. According to the Encarta Dictionary critical thinking is disciplined intellectual criticism that combines research, knowledge of historical context, and balanced judgment. Another source tells me it’s thinking about a subject, problem, or content. It’s self-directed, self-monitored and self- corrective thinking. Critical thinking assent standards of excellence and command of their use. As I go farther into my research of critical thinking, I also find out there are different steps to critical thinking. One of the first steps is Knowledge. Knowledge is topic, issue, thesis, and the main point. In other words you have to know what you’re thinking about. Thinking on a topic you know little about can cause you to feel overwhelmed. Step two in the critical thinking process is Comprehension. Comprehension is understanding what it is you’re reading, hearing or seeing. I comprehend better when I see or hear something being taught to me. You have to be able to comprehend what you’re thinking about to help you understand what you’re learning. The third step in critical thinking is Application. Application is to know and apply what you comprehend. In other words putting what you learn to use. Step four is Analysis. When you analysis something you break it apart and study the pieces. Step five in critical thinking is Synthesis. Synthesis is a combination of analyzed parts to form a new theory on something. The last step of critical thinking is Evaluation. Evaluation is to judge and to put in your own words. A great thinker will define, list, and describe what it is their thinking about. He would then explain and summarize it by

I don't know if there is a universal correct definition of critical thinking. I think this a very individualistic tool used by humans to break down different problems and situations and the best way to go about coming up with the best resolution in a non-biased manner. Gathering a thought process that is reasonable and with demeanor. This is simply how I would personally define critical thinking. Thinking things over more than once, second guessing yourself here and there, seeing things from multiple perspectives, and most importantly thinking if your thoughts would be different from the other side of an argument or situation. I think critical thinking is important for us to fully understand ourselves and our situations as well as others and their situations. Critical thinking is considering multiple angles and viewpoints and trying to understand them and where they come from, as well as why they exist. In my life personally, critical thinking has always been something I would like to think I've had due to being raised in a very diverse atmosphere and a very diverse community. I've seen racism towards more than one race, I've seen both sides of different biases, and I have lived in a small town closed minded community as well as the middle of a large densely populated city. It makes you think differently than most around you. It seems like you feel differently than most around you. There isn't much that surprises you so there aren't many situations that you are uncomfortable in. You think before you act, you think before you speak, and you take time and consideration to realize the type of environment you are in and the people you are surrounded by. Things like this don't go through every young person's mind before acting or speaking. You slow down, you react calmer, and you try not to get too high or too low. From this course I don't think I'm looking for how to think critically as much as why some of…

Critical thinking involves a persons ability to reason in order to support their belief. To begin the critical thinking process one must acknowledge the problem at hand, find information on the problem; research, examine the problem closely, apply moral principles, decide the best ethical choice and be able to support the claim, then go back over the process on how one came to their conclusion and lastly reflect on their decision. I have learned that the critical thinking skills process is a buiding block, each step builds onto the other to come to a ethical solution at the end. There is no shortcut to the steps and if I do so then I will not get a logical conclusion to my problem. I beleive out of all the steps the one I find myself using…

While I have learned a variety of processes and steps in this critical thinking course, the 3 most significant things that come to mind are commitment, forward thinking, and overcoming obstacles. Critical thinking requires a life time commitment if I expect my thinking to improve. I learned to be mindful of how my past affected my thinking and I learned what processes to put in place to take my thinking to a higher level. Critical thinking leaves no room for emotions and other bad habits that hinder thinking. The emotions that once drove my thinking have been replaced with a drive to move past emotion and consider what lies beyond. Critical thinking is an important source in overcoming obstacles that might hinder good and reasonable conclusions or solutions to problems and issues.…

4The first and most psychologically primitive step is recalling key terms, facts and events; or at least the ability to acknowledge this and store them into your memory. After your ability to recall the minor details, an understanding of these key terms, facts and events take you to the next level of critical thinking. This is the level of critical thinking where one would ask himself if he understand the material, and recite it back to someone in his own words. After understanding, the next step is application. The use of application takes an idea and utilizes it to produce a desired outcome. Beyond application is analysis, or the ability to break a concept down into parts for closer examination. Then is the evaluation of the critical thinking process; this is the step where we evaluate the validity or usefulness of the information presented to us. Finally, creativity tops the critical thinking process when we are able to develop something entirely new from the rest of the…
