Critical Analysis of John Updike's A&P
Critical Perspective of John Updike 's A & P The late writer John Updike was a prolific in his works with over many mediums, including novels, poetry, literary criticism, and short stories. A year after the publication of what would perhaps remain his most recognizable work of literature in novel form he penned a short story for The New Yorker entitled A &P. The very brief short story relates the story of young cashier at very ordinary grocery market in a very ordinary suburb of Boston who seemingly experiences something he perceives as very extraordinary and life changing in its impact. Though a reader might interpret the short story to be a work of literary realism, “The Art of John Updike 's A & P” published in Studies in Short Fiction in 1997 analyzes the work through the lens of post-structuralism. In that article Toni Saldivar maintains that the real interest and artistry of A & P lies in is allusion, executed with a certain sense of dramatic irony, to a widely known artwork by Botticelli known as the Venus de Milo. Saldivar maintains that Updike’s short story was originally published in The New Yorker Magazine, and therefore written with a higher level expectation of reader understanding due to that publications reputation for drawing a more educated and sophisticated following (Saldivar 215). Saldivar attempts to establish the importance of art in the writing of John Updike, indicating that “Updike, for whom literature and art have been intertwined since youth, uses allusions to art and to art criticism to give the informed reader of A & P, the experience of dramatic irony” (215), as well as drawing parallels between Venus de Milo and the imagery called forth throughout A & P. In order to maintain the supposition that Updike alludes to a famous artwork, Saldivar sets about establishing a credible link between the author and his interest in art. He maintains that Updike, as the son of educated parents and himself a Harvard and then Oxford graduate who

The setting helps contribute to the insight, knowledge and understanding to the meaning of many stories. In the short story “A & P” by John Updike, the setting helps bring to life the conformity and dehumanization in an everyday life. It shows that breaking the norm of society is unacceptable.…

David Updike’s story “Summer” describes one summer holiday of a boy named Homer. He is faced with the external conflict on an unrequited love. Homer, the protagonist, is spending the summer at his best friend, Fred’s home near the lake. The summer, for the most, followed the usual flow of ‘athletic and boyhood fulfillment” (para 11) for Homer and Fred. There were the tennis matches and hiking, the alcohol and hanging out late at night and the reckless driving of both the car and the motorboat out on the lake. However, what made this summer special to Homer was that he had fallen in love with Fred’s sister, Sandra, the antagonist. Sadly, though, she did not seem to really notice him despite all the times they spent together, and so he suffered the heartache of regret and longing as he faced his conflict of an “unrequited” love.…

Almost everyone has ambitions and dreams that they want to attain sometime during their lifetime. One shared goal is making more money, but wanting and desiring something are very different things. While wanting to make more money is a modest goal, the real desire behind it is more security and freedom. The power of desire speaks to peoples' subconscious, influences their actions, and ultimately directs their lives, as is used by John Updike as a theme in his short story A&P. The narrator, Sammy, decides to quit his tedious job because he wanted a better life for himself, although initially it was only to impress a girl. In the short story A&P, John Updike uses the theme the power of desire to express a young man's (accidental) realization of his greater goals in life.…

The three stories to be discussed in this essay are “The Bouquet” by Charles W. Chesnutt, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and “Gimpel the Fool” by Isaac Bashevis Singer. It’s interesting to dissect these pieces of literature to see how they reflect the time period they were written in, by whom they were written, and if the stories they read have any abnormalities outside what is expected.…

John Updike's short story, "A&P" is fictional in a sense that it has a common pattern that leads the reader through a series of events. These events began when three young ladies in bathing suits walk in A&P, and catch the eye of a young man named, Sammy. He seems to favor the chunkier girl of the three that walk in to the store.…

In the summer of 1961 we meet Sammy. Sammy is a 19-year-old clerk at the local A&P in a small town, and one day a few girls walk in, in their bikinis. Everyone in the store either stares at them lustfully or averts their eyes uncomfortably. When the manager gets back he scolds the girls and tells them that they cannot come back in there dressed that way again. So Sammy quits. I personally enjoy this story because of the dated wordplay and the character development.…

In ‘Updike’s A&P’ Harriet Blodgett uses imagery to make a statement that critics have ignored Updike’s use of the girls as legendary Sirens in his story A&P, that no one else has observed this collection of imagery in the story, and that this is important for the interpretation of Sammy. Blodgett acknowledges that Updike has used Sammy to be a hero for the girls, but feels that critics have missed the obvious use of the girls to purposely tempt Sammy. And that Updike used this imagery to make the reader think of a mermaid, which would mean Queenie was a Siren. The Images Blodgett uses to come to this conclusion begin with the market itself, the surrounding beach, and the fact that the girls came to the market to purchase herring snacks. Blodgett points out the physical attributes of Queenie that are similar to a mermaid, and points out Queenie walked in a fashion that could show a resemblance to a mermaid. And she also believes that the herring snacks flashing in her blue eyes, as an image, equate her being aquatic royalty. Blodgett feels Updike really meant for the reader to piece these things together and come to the conclusion that Queenie was a Siren.…

Observation is a process that is constantly performed by all individuals in everyday situations. It is a tool used to gain a better understanding of a situation, although the observer is not always aware that they are in fact performing such an act. In John Updike’s, A & P, the narrator, Sammy, finds himself observing with great detail, three female shoppers in the supermarket in which he is employed. It is through his observations that not only are Sammy’s desires exposed, but he is seen as a character who lives in the moment, and quite frankly grows up in such a short period of time. A close reading towards the bottom of page 218 in the story supports these subjects through its showing of his passion for the three girls, his quick decision making, and his overall condition. In a short matter of minutes Sammy’s true colors are shown and he is left to deal with the consequences.…
