Ms. Cummings September 25th, 2013 English Language Arts The quote “The right good book is always a book of travel, it is about a Life’s Journey” by H.M Tomlinson is a quote practiced by several readers. This quote means that people in the book can grow throughout the story and take variant people to different places. This is a result of making them think of new ideas based on the author of books message or overall theme. I agree with this quote and interpretation due to the experiences I had with various books. Two works of Literature that supports this quote is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Monster by Walter Dean Meyers. These books relate to the quote by using the literary element person vs. society and characterization. The first example is from the story Monster, by Walter Dean Meyers. The main character, Steve Harmon, was accused of killing a store clerk for 5 cartons of cigarettes. At the crime scene, one of the security cameras in the store showed someone pulling out a gun and shooting the store clerk with it. However; someone claimed they saw Steve Harmon shoot the store clerk even though he was just the lookout. Nonetheless, he was with the wrong people at the wrong time. Steve Harmon as a student had countless dreams. He had hopes of becoming a professional photographer. If he didn’t perform this action, he might have gotten this result, which in this case incarceration. Eventually, Steve Harmon turned a bad mistake into positive opportunity by making a movie about his personal experience. This example about Steve supports the interpretation of H.M Tomlinson’s quote in all good books, people change and matures. Another literary work that proves the quote is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Atticus Finch who is a lawyer in a racist town has the opportunity of representing Tom Robinson who is a wrongfully accused and convicted of a murder he did not commit. The author applies characterization when Atticus Finch shows how lack of concern for the color of Mr. Robinson but what justice is brought to him. As a result, Mr. Atticus has to try ad convince the entire town who has develop a certain bias, that color doesn’t matter. He does this by showing his strength by persevering through the entire name calling and not giving up on what is right for Mr. Robinson. Through person vs. society Atticus is able to change the people of the town minds about racism and make them more open minded. Furthermore; in the book To Kill a Mockingbird, the quote is applied when Atticus was able to take people into a different mindset or place and open their intellect by getting the towns people to inquire about things they never would have thought of. In conclusion, H.M Tomlinson quote Im sure can relate to various Literatures and a myriad of people experiences. In the two Literatures, it showed how one person can change a mindset of many, through perseverance and motivation. Furthermore; to sum it all up a good book is one who opens your mind to various opinions, thoughts and conclusions. Also; while taking you on a life journey without even leaving your original designation.

“The evil that is in the world almost always comes of ignorance, and good intentions may do as much harm as malevolence if they lack understanding.” - Albert Camus. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a group of British schoolboys become stranded on a deserted tropical island after their plane is shot down. Without the rules and structure of civilization the boys quickly descend into savagery. Some of the boys who are led by Ralph, the group’s chosen leader, are peaceful and work together to achieve common goals. The others led by Jack are hunters who act selfishly and indulge in violence. William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, tells the story of Macbeth, a brave Scottish general, who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will be the King of Scotland. His ambitious thoughts and influence from his wife spurs him to murder King Duncan and seize the throne. Macbeth becomes a tyrannical ruler and is forced to commit more murders in order to protect himself from suspicion. In literature, evil seems like a good choice and is slightly successful but in the end it is proven to be less than good, possibly even harmful. The idea that evil often triumphs but never conquers in literature is true. This is shown in Golding’s Lord of the Flies and Shakespeare’s Macbeth. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph is chosen the leader and sets the goal of getting rescued using a signal fire to attract ships. Jack is the leader of the hunters and wishes to use authoritarian rule over democratic rule. Jack is ruled over by evil through his selfishness in wanting to hunt and forget about the fire. He hides behind a mask and quickly moves towards complete savagery. He never gets that far since the boys are rescued by a naval officer. In Macbeth, the main character, Macbeth is persuaded by his wife, Lady Macbeth, to murder the king of Scotland so he will take the throne. Lady Macbeth makes Macbeth feel unmanly and cowardly so he…

This could happen if someone was in the wrong place at the wrong time or framed by setting them up to look like they did a crime. There has been thousands of cases were there has been men and women who have been wrongly accused and have had to serve years and years in a jail or prison cell because they courts accused them of something they didn’t do. A great example of being wrongfully accused would be a woman named Gloria Killian, she was accused of a robbery and murder she had nothing to do with, and she was set up and served 16 years and four months. Gloria said “I’m innocent. I did not plan the robbery. I did not know those people. I was not involved. I am not the perpetrator”. The crime she was convicted of occurred in 1981, near Sacramento, California. What really happened was that two men had broken into the home of 71 year-old Ed Davies, who was a coin collector and kept a lot of gold and silver in his home. When people arrived on scene Ed was found dead on the kitchen floor. Within days, authorities got a tip and arrested career criminal Gary Masse and charged him with the Davies’ murder. Gloria says she never knew Masse, but when an anonymous tip mentioned her name and his together, she was arrested. She told police she had no idea who Gary was but they didn’t buy into her claims of innocence after they discovered a notebook…
