Crew 19's Diegesis Structure

Theme, plot, the events and diegesis are imperative to the narrative. They form the structure of a narrative. If one element is off-kilter, the entire narrative becomes irrelevant to the audience and the suspense of disbelief is lost. In order to properly understand these elements, an in-depth analysis is required. In this essay, the narrative elements will be discussed in relation to the term project.

Diegesis is defined as “the sphere or world in which these narrated events and other elements occur.” (Random House, Inc, 2018) Diegesis needs to be properly developed in narrative, otherwise a mental image cannot be drawn and the narrative will not be successfully conveyed. “Plot is the series of events that connect the beginning to the ending” (King, 2011) Plot consists of five elements: the introduction, the rising action, the climax, the falling action and the resolution. The introduction is essentially when the audience is introduced to the diegesis and the time-frame in which the entire plot occurs. The rising action is the identification of the problem that prevents the main character’s success. The climax occurs when the problem seems insurmountable, or appears to be out of the main character’s powers. The falling action comes about when a solution becomes evident. The resolution takes place when the problem is resolved. Plot, however, is a series of events within a specific time period. Crew 19’s narrative is similar to that of the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, directed by Michel Gondry and written by Charlie Kaufman. The film is about a man, Joel Barish, who suffers from social anxiety. He had his mind erased after a bad break-up with his now-ex, Clementine Kruczynski. Joel, mid mind-erasing procedure, decides to try and preserve his memories of Clementine. However, he slowly loses his memories of her, regardless of his efforts. The movie culminates with the opportunity for Clementine and Joel to listen to their original tapes containing the memories they were trying to forget, allowing them to decide whether their relationship is worth a try. This film is similar to our term project in that the theme of mental illness is present as a social hinderance in the plot. The film also explores relationships in relation to mental illness, allowing the observation of how social anxiety recreates and redefines the norms of how typical relationships
