When caring for patients in any healthcare facility, it is important that healthcare organizations make sure that they hire competent healthcare providers. In order to determine competent providers, the process of credentialing is used. Certain qualifications must be met by any individual that is caring for the lives of others. However, qualifications for every healthcare discipline varies from state to state. In Idaho, physicians and nurse practitioners differ in credential requirements.

Before a nurse practitioner applicant can apply for Advanced Practice Professional Nurses (APPN) licensure, they must first have obtained an RN license by the Idaho Board of Nursing (Graduate Nursing EDU, n.d.). Along with an RN license, there are education requirements for the applicant as well. The application for APPN requires that the applicant must “complete a Board-approved graduate-level APPN program resulting in at least a master’s degree” (Graduate Nursing EDU, n.d.). The third requirement for licensure pertains to certification. Applicants seeking APPN licensure in Idaho must also make sure that they become nationally certified by completing an exam and to make sure that the Idaho Board of Nursing “recognizes” the accredited agency (Nurse Journal, n.d.). With these requirements, potential nurse practitioners may apply for their license. The Idaho Board of Nursing allows two options for Advanced Practice Professional Nurses to apply for state licensure. The two applications for licensure are licensure by endorsement and licensure by examination (State of Idaho Board of Nursing, n.d.). Credentialing nurse practitioners deals with many educational and accreditation

As Registered Nurses in the United States of America, we have all experienced passing board exams and having to apply for licensure applicable to each of our individual states. The board exams now known as NCLEX or National Council Licensure Examination are universal across the country. However, individual licensing requirements for a renewal or reapplication process differ from state to state. Some states such as Texas have additional testing requirements such as the Texas Nursing Jurisprudence Exam while others do not (http://www.bon.texas.gov/olv/je.html). Each state has an individual scope of practice for nurses and each defines their own licensing requirements. While there are differences in licensure requirements as well as scope of practice, the one thing that every state has in common is that policy, regulation and change are all influenced by professional associations including many professional nursing associations (Public Sector Consultants, 2012, p. 7-11).…
