Creative Writing: The Dread Pirate Roberts
Tales are told among sailors and common folk alike about the Dread Pirate Roberts. A dangerous swashbuckler braving the cruelness of the vast ocean. His name has been ringing across the land for years, too many years for a pirate captain of his stature and success to spend in piracy without cashing out his earned loot. Some seafaring men say there is no Dread Pirate Roberts. He’s like an imaginary character used to hide the real identity of who captains the pirate ship Revenge. Others yet say he’s immortal. A demigod with a knack for plundering. The true answer, however, can be much less, or much more interesting.

It was a warm, windless day. Recently washed clothes hung lazily from the rigging of the Yankee ships as the Merrimack slowly lumbered into firing range of the USS Cumberland, a thirty-gun frigate. The Yankee ships and surrounding shore batteries opened fire only to watch in amazement as their cannon balls bounced off the sloped sides of the Merrimack with no effect.…

Throughout my reading I have decided to chracterize the ruthless pirateer known as Captain Hunter. To start he is a very determined person letting nobody stand in his path towards glory. When the time comes to prepare for his risky voyage; he shows great detail and thought in what he needs. First, he meets with Whisper: the only survivor from the Matanceros raid, which of course is where Captain Hunter is planning to set sail to. This island is heavily garded with many spanish soldiers including the most ruthless of them all: Captain Cazalla. This cold-blooded monster kills with no regrets; leaving his victims stranded to die, which is exactly what he did to Whisper. Cutting his throat and leaving him for the dead, but somehow he survived.…

He wore his full-dress uniform, with the heavily braided white cap pulled down rakishly over one cold gray eye” was the scene in his first daydream. Holmes’s use of continuous personification of the ship, comparing it to a powerful female, really helped in relaying the prideful theme and sentimental tone. An example of this personification could be “Her deck, once red with heroes’ blood,” (Line 9). This sentence shows how Holmes respected the ship’s past, giving away the sentimental tone, and was proud of its accomplishments. Holmes also used metaphors to describe the ship’s prowess. “The meteor of the ocean air” (Line 7) compares the ship’s cannonballs to meteors, showing how powerful they were. The use of battle imagery in general lets the reader understand the prideful tone.…
