Betty Topper's physical development was severely delayed. She weighed around half the weight of an average six year old. This was due to malnutrition and maybe even psychosocial dwarfism. In the psychosocial dwarfism syndrome, the failure to grow is caused because the production of growth hormone is suppressed due to extremely high levels of psychosocial stress. Once sufferers are removed to a normal (nurturing) environment, there is usually rapid catch-up growth; which is true to Topper's case. It is not just growth that is affected by this syndrome, but also the onset of puberty meaning Betty might hit puberty later than normal.…

It’s my first day in this mental hospital, and I hate it. These green suits are like hazard suits. They’re meant to shield the wearer from hostile environments that are a threat to their health. Here, it’s the converse. They’re meant to protect the staff and society from us. I’ve heard from this Indian guy, some Chief Bromden, that whoever’s in there is different than what society accepts. I’ve also heard from him that Lord Nurse Ratched gets to determine whether you leave or not, which all depends if you’re committed. My entry interview to determine that is next.…

Nothing seemed to scare him more then the quiet before the storm. It wasn't a familiar feeling for Keith, fear. Often he didn't even spare a moment to worry about circumstances before rushing into dangerous missions head first. Usually he had Lance in his ear, edging him on, filling his head in that calm and confident manner, his voice filling the silence of space. Now, Keith was left to listen to the void, his nerves prickling at his skin underneath his armor. Screw the silence, he thinks, screw Lance and his stupid hero complex, screw the universe for putting him here.…

Fighting temptation describes a battle that is as much spiritual as it is emotional or physical. To be tempted is not a sin. Everyone is tempted and at different levels. Even Jesus was tempted! Temptation happens when the opportunity is presented to do what we know is wrong, whether against God, ourselves, or others. Being tempted is not wrong - it's the decision to do wrong and the corresponding action that follows.…

I felt expelled and exiled, sitting in a room filled only with a bed. White walls which painted no imagination, no hope just emptiness; yet they still assured me I was meant to be here. Every day was the same as the last, every memory I captured had slowly escaped. I was considered dangerous, vile and out of control; these words constantly surrounded me, swirling around in the echoes of the halls. 15 years I have been here, and still not once has my voice box being strained. Everyday new comers are filling the halls with recent experiences, these are the only colour these halls ever hold, the only colour we are ever able to grasp and use to paint our own ideas of community; they enable us oldies to once again imagine. Soon enough the halls go back to plain white and emotionless passages and so to do my imaginations, the images that i had held slowly fade over and over again until i am left with nothing. This only reminded me of what was familiar.…
