Creative Writing: Sacrifice
Sam gasped when she felt the bonds fall from her wrists and feet. Loki helped her to sit and a blanket appeared to cover her. The angry and incensed god turned slow to face his followers. A snap of his fingers had Connor’s father before him and bound in chains- the same chains that had earlier held his son. A wave of his hand had the exits sealed closed. Sam took a measure of satisfaction in the panicked murmurs around the group.

“You have one opportunity now, godhi, to tell me why I was called to see a ritual sacrifice of fear and death instead of joy and good fortune. Anything less than the truth sends you to see my daughter personally within the hour.” Loki growled.

Sam’s eyes widened. Connor had told her about Loki’s children too. His

The man knew it. As gods did, Loki read between the lie and had even searched the mans thoughts. His son had been murdered out of jealousy and rage.

“I’m less than pleased. You’ve shed innocent blood in my name. I’ll never deny a blood sacrifice… a willing blood sacrifice! You’ve taken a maiden against her will. You’ve tied her to an alter of wood and forced her to watch that boys death. If you bothered to learn, I do not deny virgin sacrifices… willing ones.”

The man whimpered. “Mercy, my lord. Please…”

Silence filled the room as all eyes trained to the god. He only smirked. Sam got the impression Loki liked the attention.

“Death. Hel will be pleased.”

Gasps and screams filled the cave as Loki’s form twisted into that of a great serpent like creature with the head and body of a dragon, wings of an eagle, paws of a great lion and having the tail of a giant scorpion. Sam had to cover her ears to drown away the sounds of bones snapping, screaming and blood spilling to the stone floor. She knew she’d be sick if she listened much

Feelings of foreboding flooded his senses as the hair on the back of his neck stood out. Someone had listened to his conversation, and was residing in the shadows of his room. How had he not sensed this before? “Whoever is here, step forward. Do so quickly or face my wrath.” A tall, muscular man stepped forward. A knight, he surmised, wearing jade colored armor with a coat of arms on his chest plate that he did not recognize, figures of two fighting dragons adorned his gauntlets, and in his hands, he threateningly…

The crumbling leaves swayed, as the winter air crashed against his home. Walking towards his farm, William became uncomfortably aware of his surroundings. He grew up in this town, spending his days working and adventuring in every niche of the area. For an eighteen year old, his journey of life was monotonous. He endeavoured to peregrinate and advance his life- but his next journey was one that caused a nauseous, yet prideful feeling in the pit of his stomach.…

“Let you not mistake your duty as I mistook my own. I came into this village like a bridegroom to his beloved, bearing gifts of high religion; the very crowns of holy law I brought, and what I touched with my bright confidence, it died; and where I turned the eye of my great faith, blood flowed up. Beware, Goody Proctor - cleave to no faith when faith brings blood. It is mistaken law that leads you to sacrifice. Life, woman, life is God's most precious gift; no principle, however glorious, may justify the taking of it. I beg you, woman, prevail upon your husband to confess. Let him give his lie. Quail not before God's judgement in this, for it may well be God damns a liar less than he that throws his life away for pride. Will you plead with him? I cannot think he will listen to another.”…

The first thing he asks God is to “set watch” before his mouth, and “keep the door” of his tongue. It appears as though he wants the Lord to know he has good intentions, but realizes he will speak evils, and wants the Lords help in staying his tongue. He proceeds to ask that his heart not be inclined to do any evil thing, and that he not be allowed to enjoy the dainties of wicked men. Essentially, he’s further more asking the Lord to make sure that he stays righteous and true. This is where I began feeling like whatever was lurking on the horizon for this person might be something he thinks is going to greatly test his beliefs and values.…
