Creative Writing: Riverdale Country School
The reason Wes 1's mom didn't want him to go to public school was because she was afraid.
Riverdale Country School with its rolling hills and luxurious land was in the Bronx and had the grand appearance of a university that sat along the banks of the Hudson River. The buildings were also ivy covered and the whole placed seemed like something you might find in a storybook. Wes 1 felt uncomfortable attending Riverdale because he knew that his neighborhood friends would look down on him. He knew the name of the school wasn't going to impress any of them but rather they would become suspicious of him. Wes 1 knew that some of your reputation came from your school.
Crack was introduced in the 1980's and it was different than the drugs that

Wes was sent to Valley Forge Military Academy ultimately by the decisions he made at his previous school and at home. The first big decision he made before getting sent to military school was getting bad grades and not attending class. The phone class with Wes’s mom and Riverdale. “The final straw came one evening while she sat downstairs on the phone listening to me dean from Riverdale explain why they were placing me on academic and disciplinary probation. It wasn’t pretty. Bad grades, absence from classes, and an incident with a smoke bomb” (pg.87). By getting bad grades and not going to school Wes is giving up on learning. Wes was finally sent to military school after getting in trouble for giving his little sister a bloody lip. “I began…

Both Weses are challenged with adapting to their new neighborhoods. After moving to the Bronx, Joy, the author Wes’s mother, sought that he wouldn’t go to a public school. All the schools she had gone to as a child were still there, but not the same institutions. “Crumbling walls, faded paint and if you were one of the lucky 50 percent who made it out in four years” (47). It was definitely not clear that you’d be prepared for a college or a job. The other Wes had previously lived in three other places. Now, he is trying to adapt to a fourth location. His new location was only 10 miles away from his old neighborhood. However, thick old trees that lined the streets were evidence of how far he really was from the Baltimore city row houses. The other Wes now lives in Baltimore County.…

Throughout his entire time at Valley Forge, things were given to Wes to allow him to pick his pathway. This came to him through role models such as Captain Hill and Colonel Murphy, both of which gave him life lessons and inspiration. Even though Wes had a very strong hatred for the school at first, he grew to see how it would positively affect him. This was through his realization of what his family was doing for him, and what the people inspiring him were doing for him. Author Wes stated that Captain Hill had cared about his succession and wanted to help Wes come to value Valley Forge and what was offered. “They made it clear that they cared if I succeeded, and eventually so did I,” stated the author [115]. Looking at this evidence and using what we know from the book, we can directly see the impact of the people coming from Valley Forge had on Wes. As he learned people wanted him to succeed, he taught himself to value and care about the potential he has and the future he could have. The text portrays the idea that Valley Forge, as an extrinsic factor, is impacting Wes and his perception of his future. This is where his path becomes more detailed as he tries multiple paths such as basketball. Due to the desire for success and self-betterment, Valley Forge Military School has proven to be a major factor affecting…

I enjoyed this book by Bell Hooks far more than I did Creative Schools by Ken Robinson. I thought this author had a better ability to lay out her thoughts and explain to the reader more efficiently her ideas. The chapters were fifty percent shorter as well, which helped the reading feel less drawn out and lengthy. The author did a better job providing examples from her life that related to the subject than Robinson did, although they were also rather lengthy. Creative Schools tended to have the examples seem more like tangents rather than supporting a point unlike this book so far. Although the Hooks’ experiences were valid, at some parts the story felt a little overwhelming with the larger vocabulary usage and the overuse of the word “pedagogy.”…

We reached The Dalles today. This is our last stop to Oregon city and this is going to be the most dangerous part of the whole trip. We have to take the Barlow Road around Mt. Hood. The road is very messy. There are big rocks guarding the road. Sticks and broken wagon pieces are getting stuck in the wagons. On top of that, everyone is getting sick and have no energy to move the wagon and walk up the steep hill and walking through the narrow paths are hard because we can't walk on the side to hold the wagon up. The oxen are getting too tired to walk anywhere and the other families with mules keep stopping and that makes us run behind on schedule. Many people are dying because they have worked too much and haven't gotten enough sleep. When we…

Wes mother Joy brought the story to her son’s attention. Wes came to realize that the young man had been raised in a neighborhood, not far from where he’d lived with his family, before moving to the Bronx. Just blocks, seemed to separated the two of them at one time. But, there was more to this article, not just the familiarity of the neighborhood, but the name, of “one” of “four” young men, mentioned in the article. The name that stood out, was his own, Wes Moore.…

I come from Charlotte, North Carolina, one of the most up and coming cities in America. My town is a beautiful, flourishing area with a lot to offer to a variety of people. With such diversification, we have not integrated our neighborhoods, schools, or the social scene nearly enough. Communities can become racially prevalent leading to separations in culture and heritage. I can see this in the high schools throughout the area during our football games or competitions which is depriving to everyone involved. Leaving people unaware of their surroundings creates a bubble of ignorance. Mallard creek provides so much culture as it is is zoned for so many areas, however, other schools are not provided the opportunity I am. As the severance continues,…

Yesterday Glenn and I experienced Loon Lake here in Northern California, and man was it a great experience! Loon lake is located in Northern California and is adjacent to the legendary Rubicon Trail. Our day started with meeting at In N Out in Auburn CA at 4:30 a.m.....well I was there at 4:30; Glenn showed up around 4:50 but I can say it was fashionably late, at least as fashionable as a person can be that early in the morning. During my twenty minute wait, surprisingly I wasn't alone at this In N out. There were about three vehicles I spotted while sitting on the trunk of my Toyota Solara drinking my morning coffee as I thought to myself...what good reason could someone have for being at a random In N out at such a random time? Keep in mind…

The problem with Riverdale does not entirely lie in the school system, it lies in the surroundings around the school system. The drug invested streets and all of the violence makes it extremely hard for Riverdale schools to be a suitable place to get an education. Temptation surrounds the school system and it cannot escape from it. Not having a whole lot of disciplinary actions for unsuitable behavior also causes the school system to crumble away from the best, “The problem was that I wasn’t even showing up half the time,” (Moore 76). The author Wes Moore does not have the discipline for not going to his designated classes.…

Even though Riverdale seemed like a solution, it was still difficult for Wes. “Every time he looked at his fellow students, he was reminded of how little he fit in”. In this paragraph, Wes is showing of how much poorer he was from his fellow students having to rotate his “good clothes” and avoid talking about how he “summered”. He never had Riverdale friends over to his home, only visiting their houses. Because of the stress, he let his grades slip.…

Growing up in Lincoln Park Chicago, I went to a private school for preschool through 1st grade. Although it was a exceptional school for elementary kids, the education for middle school and high students was not as adequate. On Average, three or four teenagers graduated from the eighth grade class. When I was in 2nd grade, my parents made the decision to move to the suburbs. On June 27th, we all packed into our Honda minivan and drove the 45 minutes out to a new home in the town of Winnetka. Wishing I could bring my friends and my past life with me, I cursed my parents for removing me from my old way of life. I had to leave behind all of my friends and teachers. Within my first year at Crow Island, my new school, I had learned so many new…
