Creation Myths And Religion
Creation Myths were first created to help the peoples of the certain time period in different places across the world figure out why they were put on the Earth. The Mayan, the Shinto, and the Christians all had different beliefs to how they were created. The Mayan myth comes from the Popol Vuh, a sacred book of the Mayan peoples. While the Shinto’s myth came from Japan’s oldest chronicle, Kojiki (“Record of Ancient Matters”). The Book of Genesis comes from the first book of Hebrew scripture, Genesis tells the creation myth of the Christians. Creations myths were made to explain what values the different cultures had and how the leaders of these times used the myths to justify their positions. Men and women and their roles would be an example. In Genesis , it is said that God made man first then from man’s rib, woman was created. This indicates man is to leave his parents and adhere to his wife to become one flesh. This also implies man provides for the woman in this time period. Woman is however supposed to be inferior to man since was not created first and did not have the right to help man name all the animals on Earth. In the Shinto myth, it is not said to how men and women are created but how the gods came to be. The Shinto gods were both men and women. In this time period in Japan, men and women were seen as equals. Women could be Shinto priest just as the men. As for the Mayans, the first humans incompetent, the walked on all four and did not know their creator. However, in Mayan society, women had the more domestic occupations while the men went out and hunted and also fought for their people if need be. In addition to their domestic duties, women also participated in economic, governmental, and farming activities such as picking the
