One example of assimilation is when Ella remembers knowing what treat means. She holds back and doesn’t know what to do but she remembers from her existing scheme that it is good. An example for accommodation is when Mrs. A ties Noah’s shoe, she sings him the bunny song and he relates it to the bunny foo foo song. But he then is told that they are not the same so he alters it.…
The movie Crash is a very interesting and compelling movie that showed some social problems like racism and stereotypes that occur in everyday life. The movie starts off a day later from the present when a Det. Graham Waters is at a scene of a crime and just got a look at the victim which happen to be his own brother (revealed at the end of the movie). The movie then goes on to follow a variety of characters such as Det. Graham Waters, Sgt. John Ryan, Ria (Det. Waters’ partner), D.A. Rick Cabot and his wife Jean, Cameron Thayer a Hollywood director and his wife Christine, Anthony who steals cars with his friend Peter (who is Det. Waters’ brother), a Persian family, a Hispanic family, and officer Tom Hansen. The film goes on to show the experiences of racism and stereotypes these people endure over a two day period. The movie was very exciting and showed some social problems that still happen today. It went deep into the context of how people still…
In one of the scenes, we can see the protagonist riding the subway for the first time. In the beginning of the ride to the end of the ride, we can see a large demographic change. The New Yorkers was spotted in the beginning of the ride but disappeared as the subway arrived to Harlem. A young man shows an elaborate card trick to the protagonist and offered the truth about the line of segregation between the white commuters and immigrants commuters. My favorite quote from him was “for my next trick, I will make the whites disappear.” This seemed to be true since whites are portrayed rarity in Harlem. We can see how Immigrants assimilate into American society by working in Manhattan.…
Assimilation is the process in where individuals or groups of people differing ethnic heritage are absorbed into the dominant culture of a society. The process of assimilating involves taking on the traits of the dominant culture to such a degree that the assimilating group becomes socially indistinguishable from other members of the society. Assimilation can be forced or voluntary. (http://www.britannica.com/topic/assimilation-society). In the novel Code Talker, Joseph Bruchac clearly shows the assimilation of the Navajo Indians. Code Talker is about a boy named Kii who must leave everything behind to go to a strict school that only allows English. Going to this new school is hard for him. Kii knows little to no English since he grew up speaking Navajo. When he gets a little older he learns he can join the Marines in WWII where he is asked to speak a secret code that involves his native language. His experiences helped save our nation and in the end, made him a hero. Kii Yahzi demonstrates growth as a character as he assimilates to his ever-changing environment.…
The movie Crash, written and directed by Paul Haggins, shows many forms of diversity, stereotyping and racism. Each race is represented throughout the movie and blatantly displays racial discrimination and ethnocentrism.…
The last concept that is displayed in Crash is the sociological concept of ethnocentrism. This means that we judge other cultures by the standards of our own. Not only that, but we also believe that our own culture is superior to everyone else's. Graham and his Latina girlfriend fight and he pokes fun at her culture by calling her Mexican even though she isn't. Asian Americans speech patterns are made fun of, like the term "blaking" for braking. These characters don't celebrate or even accept the characteristics of other cultures. They only mock them, assuming the superiority of their own culture. They fail to try to understand one another through ethnocentrism. Officer Ryan makes fun of the name Shaniqua, a more common name of African American culture.…
Movies are a powerful outlet to depict certain racial observations. Theaters insulate moviegoers in a cocoon-like setting with little distractions. This setting is an ideal situation to sway an audience. Movies can desensitize people to issues and shift public attitudes through influence. While there are many real scenarios portrayed in fictional film, to say that movies similar to Crash are completely accurate portrayals of reality is an oversight. The movie Crash, directed by Paul Haggis, is an attempt to accurately portray the various racial, ethnic, and racial stereotypes within the cast of characters…
At the accident scene, Ria (Jennifer Esposito), whom is Latina, is involved in the accident. As she exits her vehicle, she approaches Kim Lee (Alexis Rhee), who is very upset and also involved in the accident. Kim, who is Asian, immediately makes a comment towards Ria about her being Mexican. Ria in return makes fun of the way Kim talks, due to Asians speech patterns. The sociological concept that is shown is ethnocentrism. Each one of the women is judging the other person’s culture by their own. Crash is full of ethnocentrism.…
Assimilation is the process by which many groups have been made a part of a common cultural life, which commonly shared values.…
For a long time, assimilation was the dominant ideology, where immigrants and minorities socially integrated into American society. However, contemporarily America has become an multicultural society, where the minority group has outweigh the majority group in number. Therefore, assimilation is no longer seen as a completely inevitable and desirable process, and is even criticized for it's nature of culture eradication. In the reading written by Richard Alba and Victor Nee, Alba and Nee suggested that despite the deficiencies of traditional assimilation, it is still being the best way to understand and describe the integration into the mainstream experienced across generations by many individual and ethnic groups. Thus, they proposed a reformulation of assimilation which the definition is very different. In their version of assimilation, it is no longer a process which minorities loses their cultural traits and merges into the majority host society. It became a process where reduction of ethnic differences takes place between two…
According to the article acculturation “is the acquisition of the cultural elements of the dominant society—language, food choice, dress, music, sports, etc.—w as the process by which assimilation was to be achieved,” (p. 369). This being said I agree with the author’s posture on acculturation to an extent because I feel like there is much to discuss when looking at the effects of acculturation. This is a something that is seen in the United States because there are so many different cultures present.…

In order to feel comfortable, included and accepted, many immigrants and people of ethnic upbringings are forced to assimilate. What is referred to as the WASP gentry (White Anglo Saxon Protestant) is the standard of how to be. Assimilation is a complex social issue, in the words of Liu, times have changed and America has gone many…
When people partake in the is level of assimilation, there are often reports that they feel like they are living a double life or have two identities (Urban, 2010). Level six is compensatory adaptation. In this level, people become fully engaged in new culture and no longer assimilate with their old culture. In the past, people in this level would go as far as changing their last name and religious views to fully dissociate themselves from their old culture…
The central idea of being persecuted until assimilation occurs is emphasized through the text. In the essay “I, Too, Sing America” it states, “For the first time in my life I experienced prejudice and playground cruelty.” Alvarez is depressed with her experiences, and was…
