All of our technology has come a very long way over the years. From the very first phone or television that was invented, it is unbelievable how these same devices look and function in today’s world. You now have flat screen televisions instead of tube televisions. We advanced from the first phone to now having satellite phones and cell phones. Modern technology is very amazing in one aspect, but very crippling to us in another. We have become so dependent on it that we would be lost without all of our gadgets.…
Technology has replaced what was once common for people to engage in, such as manually washing clothes and dishes, face-to-face communication, and using candle powered light. People of the United States feel compelled to possess all kinds of technology so as to make their lives more convenient. Having a smartphone is now viewed as a necessity, and something that people assume everyone owns. Even in schools those who do not have smartphones are somewhat outcasts when a teacher asks the whole class to pull out their phones. Part of the American Dream is materialistic—owning the finest of things, such as the best technological devices. The conformity of United States citizens since World War II to seek materialistic pursuits has given technology power over the lifestyles of Americans. Nowadays people cannot live without their technological devices, they have become weak and dependent upon technology, consequently giving it all the power over them and the American lifestyle. Without technology, people are unable to do the most colloquial of tasks, such as using a dictionary to look up a word, travelling without the luxuries of a car or airplane, and not rely on running water. By conforming to society’s materialistic goal of acquiring the best technological gadgets, Americans have given technology complete power over their selves and would not be able to function without…
Anyone living today knows the effects technology has had on society today, not to mention how it’s changed our generation entirely. Our generation can hardly remember a time when technology didn’t exist. It’s become a part of our lifestyle, and isn’t going anywhere soon. “The evolution of technology has reached a point where pretty much anything is available at the touch of a button. Shopping, learning, working and entertainment can all be accessed from the comfort of our own homes, on a train or sat in a cafe,” (The Guardian).…
Most people take for granted the fact that Americans live in a world of comfort and leisure. They don’t stop to consider that a hundred years ago, many of the modern conveniences that we enjoy now weren’t even around. Television, for instance, has consumed a vast amount of time in the every day American life. The average person watches around four hours of TV every day.…
The sounds of machines, vehicles, and humans chatter sometimes mask the chirps of birds and the rustling of leaves on a windy day. Materialism often makes an individual to occupied to focus on the simple things in life, especially nature. When new phones, computers, or other gadgets are released, there is nothing more important than waiting in line overnight to be the first to get it. Technology is something that most people are consumed by everyday with spending several hours on it daily. These disturbances from life make it impossible to value nature over material…
Some wish that they could turn back time to the good old days, but are the old days that good that they are worth reliving? The title of this article answers that question: “Don't Look to the 'Good Old Days': 31 Ways Life Is Better than Ever Before.” Despite the several problems our generation is facing today, such as global warming, poverty, inequality, corruption, and traffic, the world is actually improving. Life is much better and easier now than it used to be, and the author has given thirty-one reasons to support this. The concepts of electricity, air conditioning,…
“I cannot imagine how I would live without it.” These are the words uttered by countless teenagers and adults about the technology they use to enhance their daily lives. It is hard to remember the days of lugging around CD’s and walk-mans. Bicycles as transportation seem like a thing of the past. Writing notes and remembering information for the next day is long forgotten. Reading encyclopedias and using books for research papers seems nonexistent. Simple technological advancements have changed how people view the world. As a child of a modern age, technology has become an integral part of my everyday life. A separation of these technical innovations…
Americans in general define cars, TVs, computers, and cell phones as necessities. Especially in this time period, technology has gone above and beyond anything anyone could dream of a decade ago. Technology has also become infused in our day-to-day activities, becoming something people say they can’t live without. If the electricity were to go out, people have a hard time occupying themselves without the use of their cell phones, TVs, or…
“We do not ride the railroad; it rides on us,” Henry David Thoreau once stated in a caveat that, unfortunately, the majority of the population has failed to heed. Thoreau’s “railroad” represents modern technology and he believes that people indulge themselves in technology so greatly to the point that it essentially dictates their lives and actions. Similarly, in “Burned Out and Bored” Ronald Dahl reflects upon how the increased use of technology, among many other factors, has caused people to become overly dependent and stimulated that one can argue that, in a way, technology is actually setting us back rather than moving us forward.…
Did you ever watched the movie Wall-E by DreamWorks? Because if you did, you will notice how technologies have destroyed our earth and how technologies have turned us into fat, stupid and slow creatures. Moreover, did you ever notice how people act in trains in China? When one stands in the middle of the crowd, what he can only sees when he raise his head is everyone looking at their phones. The only people who are not on the phones are old grandmas and grandpas chatting happily with each other. The advance of technologies is indeed good, it makes people’s life easier. In the past, a mail needs at least 10 days to travel from a side of the world to the other side; Now, an e-mail needs only a click. Workers worked easier for industry works, friends and families communicate with each others easier, everything become easier with technologies. One day without internet or our phones will make us feel like 10 years outside the society. We are already too dependent on modern technologies, some people stays mostly at home in their whole life. The advance of modern technologies will make us turned into fat humans like the one in movie Wall-E. Continuously the technologies advanced and more and more people preferred to stay at home instead of meeting others outside. We are losing traditions, losing cultures, losing the nature of being a human and we are even losing our purpose of enjoying life. We are becoming too dependent on modern society and if it advances more, we loses more. We lost traditions, natures, cultures, purposes, time and money for one thing, Convenience. If one day in the future, our technologies failed us, what will happen? When technologies stop working, can humans live or can the world work as it always does? Students started using iPads instead of books in schools, families starts to use their phones instead of happily chatting everyday. If people ever…
our daily living. We are surrounded by technology we depend on technology. But this has also o…
Walking around a busy street today we would most likely see people on their cell phones; talking with a friend on the other end or checking their social media sites. The improvements in today’s technology have made it easier for us to connect to society and have made our lives easier. But sometimes changes that make our lives easier don't necessarily make them better. Some changes in society have produced many problems.…
In “The World is Too Much With Us,” William Wordsworth utilizes literary devices such as tone, personification, and allusion to address how the growth of industry has influenced people to become disconnected with nature. Through the traditional structure of a Petrarchan sonnet, Wordsworth conveys a negative attitude towards these industrial changes and how the changes are too drastic even for religion to fix. The author uses the volta, the traditional shift of a Petrarchan sonnet between the octave and sestet, to respond to the spiritual losses caused by materialism. The poem communicates to the audience that the expansion of industry causes people to overlook the beauty of nature. Wordsworth conveys different tones throughout the poem to address that how the overwhelming fixation of materialism is causing people to lose touch with nature as well as their own souls.…
Some of the stories of the old days are unimaginable for modern life. Little things like music artists now seem comical when compared to today’s superstars. My grandparents are quick to defend their generation with the famous saying: “back then music was music”, and for the most part they are right. Technology has all but eliminated the need for instruments. Even the worst vocalist can sing like the wind with a punch of a couple of buttons. I often wonder if modern life has spoiled my generation. But then I think about such things that are considered necessities, such as our modern day ability to produce food at a tremendous rate. In the old days farming was very time consuming, and everyone in the family helped out with it. It’s…
In the movie “Walle” there was presented a vision of a generation so dependent on technology, that their lives were mostly based on eating, sleeping and procrastinating. Every person that I asked about this movie reacted the same. This vision horrified everyone. I think it had such a huge impact on receivers, because it makes us realize that we don’t want to end up like this. We don’t really want to sit and do nothing, despite the fact that sometimes this sounds like the best idea in the world. I like to assume that we all have some goal we want to achieve and our lives are the story of how we are getting there, to the final point. So even if the technology will be improve to the point where our every day responsibilities will be taken over, we will still find something that keeps us busy. This is how life works. Even, when somebody is rich enough to afford everything and don’t need to do absolutely anything, still he finds some passion or job, another goal.…
