"The Coup De Grace". "The Coup De Grace" is written by Ambrose Bierce. This essay describes how this story is a good example of naturalistic writing.
American naturalism first began in 1893 with Stephen Crane's Maggie. Naturalistic writers usually write stories that mostly take place below the belt and show the sad, but true realities that take place in life. Through the story, naturalists stay present by using authorial intrusion to comment on events taking place. Naturalists also believe that one's fate is determined by a combination of their environment, heredity, and the element of chance. Ambrose Bierce's, "The Coup De Grace," is a good example of American naturalism.

The environment that Bierce chooses helps to express his theme. The stories environment takes place on a battlefield after a recent battle. Many people are lying around hurt, suffering, and on their way to meet their maker. The reason Bierce chooses this type of environment is he is ultimately trying to make a case for allowing assisted suicide and show that the Captain's actions were acceptable. Bierce chose the perfect environment to assist in supporting his theme.

The character heredity was designed to have a specific outcome. The three main characters were the Sergeant, Captain, and Major. The Major and the Sergeant were brothers serving in the war together. The Sergeant also had a relationship with the Captain. Even though they were not related by blood, many would consider them close enough to be brothers. The twist though is that between the Major and the Captain existed one of the fiercest rivals. The two absolutely hated each other and would love nothing more than to see the other one dead. The Captain's motivation to kill the Sergeant was strictly out of love for his friend. He knew he was going to die soon and couldn't stand to watch his friend suffer on the ground wounded. The Major's motivation to kill the Captain though was due to his hatred for him. When he saw the Captain put his sword through his brother's chest, he ordered him to face a firing squad.     Throughout this work Heller relies heavily on the use of juxtapositions. A prime example of this is the way Colonel Cathcart feels about his rank as a colonel; he, “…was conceited because he was a full colonel with a combat command at the age of only thirty-six; and Colonel Cathcart was dejected because although he was already thirty-six he was still only a full colonel,” (Heller 192). His emotions about his age and rank are complete opposites. He is happy that he is young and ranked highly, but unhappy that he is young and ranked lower than younger men. There were even juxtapositions within character descriptions as Cathcart is described as, “…dashing and dejected, poised and chagrined,” (Heller 191). Heller uses completely contrasting adjectives in order to describe the colonel. For every good trait he possesses there is a bad one to even it out. These types of juxtapositions can even be found in descriptions of characters that are not even involved with the war. For example, “Nately’s mother, a descendant of the New England Thortons, was a Daughter of the Revolution. His father was a Son of a Bitch, (Heller 255). Nately’s mother is a well-respected member of society. In direct contrast to her good qualities, is his father, who possesses the poor qualities. The fact that they are married shows union.     The introduction of characters comes with a description of a "natural antipathy which circumstances had nourished and strengthened to an active animosity,"(2) concerning the Captain and Major. The hatred they share is so intense that it is enough to wish the other one dead. When Madwell suggests that he is of the "opinion that it would be better if [Major Halcrow] were dead," (3) it addresses a casualness they both have towards the idea of death. The feeling of hate is so strong between the two men that they fail to realize the severity of their words and desires. Their hatred sets the stage for the reader, such that upon the arrival of the three men "two [being] hospital attendants…the third [is] Major Creede Halcrow," (3) the reader is left with a climactic ending. The recognition of the enormous hatred between Major Halcrow and Captain Madwell leaves the reader to decide how such an intense feeling will manifest into action. Furthermore the death scene and Sergeant Halcrow's reaction to the situation accentuates the assumptions Captain Madwell has concerning the desire of his friend. Madwell first finds his friend mortally wounded and looks at him desperate to find some sort of relief for his dying "subordinate and friend."
