Thanks to the globalization, Asian economy is drawing more and more the attention of the rest of the world. Nevertheless, when we talk about economic growth in Asia, we think mostly about China, India or Japan whereas South Korean economy is staying quite unknown in Belgium. However, since the war in the Korean peninsula and the formation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) in 1948, South Korea has becoming a major economic power. Indeed, South Korea ranked fifteens (in terms of GDP) among the best world’s economies and fourth among Asian economies in 2009. To reach this, the Korean economy has experienced three development stages since the end of the Korean war: the economic autonomy increase from the ’50 to the ’60 in order to become less dependent on importations; the massive expansion of exportations during the ’70; the development of some industries form the ’70 until now to become one of the world leader in sectors like high technology, automotive, shipbuilding and steel industry. Furthermore, since the financial crisis of 1997, we can observe a decrease of the government intervention in the Korean economy and the development of a market-oriented economy. But South Korea is currently facing important difficulties like the lack of raw materials, the small size of the country, the competition with Chinese and Japanese industries and the political and military issues with North Korea. The purpose of this paper is to study the economic attractiveness of South Korea based on the “Diamond Model” framework of Porter (1998). We will also examine the main industries, the balance of trade and the political and commercial risks of investing in South Korea.…

An analysis of the Sustainability Report (an organizational report which gives information about economic, environmental, social and governance performance) states the fact that Samsung Group was ranked number one for sales among global IT companies for the first time in 2009. By reviewing the outstanding performance of Samsung, an information technology company established in South Korea in 1969, it is conspicuous for citizens in the global village to notice the country’s growing economic strength. South Korea has indeed established itself internationally as a formidable newly advanced economy by overcoming the global financial crisis from 2007-2008 (which resulted in the threat of total collapse of large financial institutions, the bailout of banks by national governments, and the downturns in stock markets around the world) with notable speed and effectiveness. Since South Korea has already became a developed country with remarkable economic power, I wonder what factors might cause challenges for South Korea’s economy in the future and what the government can do to overcome these upcoming obstacles?…

Due to its location and cultural differences, South Korea is often still considered as an emerging market. According to Wharton Faculty, an emerging market is defined by “its economic and political institutions such as the rule of law, regulatory controls and enforcement of contracts.” (Knowlege Wharton, 2008) With a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of 25,976 USD, more goods are produced and services provided per person in South Korea than in developed countries like Portugal and Greece. Furthermore, South Korea has an efficient and stable political system, a strong economy, an excellent innovation structure and finally relatively low obstacles for Foreign Direct Investments (FDI). These characteristics and the high potential, especially in online retailing, of the developed South Korean market are obvious reasons for Amazon to enter the market.…

Definition of the “good society” is a question that human beings have been seeking throughout the centuries. It is different among nations and changes based on the historical context, cultural back ground, economic circumstances, international relations, and any other elements. South Korea today is considered that the country is on a right track to the “good society” due to the democratization, economic development, and advancement of other sectors. However, how can it be the “good society” with the highest suicide rate in the world?
