Introduction
In this reflective piece I will first discuss professional development and now I believe that the professional development of a counsellor cannot be separated from the personal development of a counsellor.
I will briefly describe and outline my place of work and the work that I undertake and I will discuss some of the growing pressures the service I offer has begun to experience in the past few years.
I shall go onto list and discuss the research and learning that I have engaged in during and throughout the past year, September 2015 to September 2016. The position requires me to manage the entire counselling service; from referral and appointments, to assessments and re-referral to other services (if required), to offering a full counselling service with record keeping and communications with the surgery staff etc. as previously mentioned the surgery is a training practice and as such it is also my duty to inform the trainees of what I and the counselling service offers the patients and how counselling can aid and benefit their practice. Many people will, at some point in their lives, find themselves in the role of a counsellor without having a true understanding of the concept of counselling or what the role of the professional counsellor entails. There is a big difference between a professional counsellor and a person who uses some counselling skills as part of their role, for example their role as a friend or colleague. A professional counsellor is a highly trained individual who is able to use a different range of counselling approaches with their clients (Anon, 2001).…

Through reflection, I have been able to better understand where I was, where I am, and where I am going as a clinical social worker.
