Counseling Session Analysis
Going into my third recorded counseling session I felt extremely confident in myself, because I have developed a good rapport with my client. I have been having short meetings with my client prior to the recording, and knew something was going on internally. Some of her teachers reported to me that she wasn’t taking her medication, and her grandparent just recently passed away. Entering the session I prepared myself for dealing with her grief, and wanted to address the goals we set the previous session. My client suffers from asthma, and had just been released from the hospital the day before, and was still feeling extremely week during our session.
During the session, I felt I was an active listener and really let the client lead the conversation. This session I really tried to make opening a session and informed consent my own. I opened up the session with explaining the Lamar program, client expectations, and confidentiality. I also used some of my client’s word “messy” when discussing confidentiality, which I felt she was amused by and I think using my client’s vocabulary really allowed her to comprehend her rights and the protocols of the session. Last recorded session my client was all over the place with the issues she was dealing with, but this session I felt I did a better job getting my client to discuss 1-2 specific issues she was dealing with. For example, my client is still dealing with issues with peers at school, and stated she wanted to discuss that situation, but I sensed there was something else she wanted to talk about, and used probing questions to find out her father was recently arrested.
