In the early spring of 1986, The Challenger was scheduled to launch in the morning from the Kennedy Space Center. The Challenger had seven passengers. One of these passengers was a Christa McAuliffe, a social studies teacher from New Hampshire. She was the first ordinary citizen to be going to space. The social studies teacher had won the opportunity through NASA’s Teachers in space program. The spacecraft was in the air only seventy-three seconds before it exploded and broke apart into the ocean. Everyone was in shock. All the passengers were killed tragically. This put a horrible mark on NASA’s reputation. Some even wanted to close the exploration to space. American was in mourning and everyone felt the blow of the tragedy. However, President Ronald Reagan saw it fit to continue space exploration. He gave an argument and a tribute to America and the families of the lost passengers. His tribute swayed American to see the silver lining in the tragedy and understand why we must continue the journey to explore space.…

This newfound planet is also a “transiting” world, meaning it crosses in front of its host star from our perspective. Of course we can’t see it from Earth, even with the most powerful telescopes, because its star so bright in comparison. Imagine trying to see a bird descend from the sky in the same line of sight as the sun.…

For many years different scientist have been researching and coming together on whether the planet Pluto should be considered a “dwarf planet” or a part of the regular planets. Pluto was discovered in 1930 by Clyde W. Tombaugh. Astronomers believed that Pluto was to be considered a planet. Soon they concluded that their evidence didn’t support their reasoning.…

When I was able to look through the telescope, I immediately observed the basic outline of the plant on a much smaller scale which I have seen through textbook drawings before. Furthermore, the planet was white in color which I believe was because the telescope couldn’t display color. In relation to brightness, the planet wasn’t particular vibrant but I could very much notice the circle in the middle surrounded by a ring. One of the most fascinating feature I noticed through the telescope lens beside Saturn was two additional white, twinkling dots on each side of Saturn which were identical in all ways. Subsequently, I learned those two dots represented the stars, Rhea and…

Now although I had hated it, after awhile I had begun to forget about it. Now imagine my shock, when I turned on the news on August the 24th 2006 and saw the headline "Astronomers Rule, Pluto is not a Planet". Supposedly a clear majority of researchers voted for the new definition at a meeting of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in Prague, the day before. According to the new definition, a full-fledged planet is an object that orbits the sun and is large enough to have become round due to the force of its own gravity. In addition, a planet has to dominate the neighbourhood around its orbit. Now obviously to me this didn't make much sense. I was still shocked by the news. I may have had my differences with Pluto in the past, but now that it's gone, I kind of miss it. But then it leads me to ask the question, "Who…

In August 2006 the International Astronomical Union downgraded the status of Pluto to "dwarf planet." This means that from now on only the rocky worlds of the inner Solar System and the gas giants of the outer system will be “named”as “planets”. The “inner Solar System” is the region of space that is smaller than the radius of Jupiter’s orbit around the sun. It contains the asteroid belt as well as the terrestrial planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The “gas giants” of course are Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus. So now we have eight planets instead of the nine we used to have.…
