I. COSTCO WHOLESALE CORPORATION

Jim Sinegal (cofounder dan CEO Costco Wholesale) sedang mengusahakan Costco menjadi 4 retailer terbesar di US dan 7 terbesar di dunia. Jim Sinegal berusia 70 tahun, suka berpakaian santai, pekerjaannya menuntutnya untuk berkeliling cabang Costco (8-10 cabang setiap harinya). Jim mentraining karyawannya agar memberikan ucapan selamat datang kepada pelanggan karena Jim ingin menjadi “first name basis” di benak pelanggannya. Jim Sinegal adalah orang sibuk karena dia berfungsi sebagai producer, director, dan pemberi kritik membangun untuk Costco. Jim bekerja dengan cepat, memberi masukan berharga tentang detail dan pricing; menanyakan dan mengkritik tentang sales volume, stock levels, merchandising displays; memberikan komentar tentang semua aspek yang ada di cabang yang tidak cocok dengan pendapatnya. Dari situ kita dapat melihat bahwa Jim sangat ahli dan berpengalaman dalam hal merchandising, keahliannya bisa disetarakan dengan Sam Walton. Tahun 2006, total sales Cosco adalah $59 milyar dengan 496 toko yang tersebar di 37 negara. Kartu member-nya sudah dimiliki oleh 26 juta keluarga. Rata-rata sales pertokonya mencapai $128 juta per tahun (lebih banyak hampir 2 kali dari pesaingnya).

COMPANY BACKGROUND

Costco dibentuk oleh Jim Sinegal dan Jeff Brotman. Toko pertama dibuka di Seattle pada tahun 1983, bersamaan dengan Sam’s Club (toko yang dibentuk oleh Wal-Mart). Dalam setahun Costco berkembang menjadi 9 toko di 5 negara melayani 200.000 anggota. Tahun 1985 Costco go public. Costco adalah perusahaan pertama di US yang mencapai penjualan $1 billion kurang dari 6 tahun. Oktober 1993, Costco merger dengan Price Club dengan Jim Sinegal sebagai CEO nya.
