Canadians have worked on the technology of extracting oil sands for energy production since the 1970’s, with assistance from the government and increasingly, US oil companies.…

Canada may become more reliant on fracked oil. The Energy East Pipeline will encourage Alberta’s oil producers to increase production. The development of this oil produces a lot of carbon emissions. Between 62 and 164 kilograms of CO2 is released per barrel produced. In situ development produces even more carbon than mining; between 99 and 176 kilograms of CO2 per barrel is released. These levels are estimated to be 3.2 to 4.5 times more than the production of conventional crude oil.…

Its products include oil sands, which they extract bitumen from and transform it into refinery feedstock and most importantly diesel fuel. Suncor also produces natural gas, which they use as hedging against internal consumption. In addition, they are currently investing in a number of international and offshore projects; like the Libya Exploration and Production Sharing Agreements, which is supposed to double daily production, the Syria Ebla Gas Development, which would produce 80 million cubic feet per day of natural gas, and the White Rose Extensions, North Amethyst and West White Rose Satellite Extensions, which are expected to add reserves of approximately 50 million barrels.…

With the proposed Canadian Keystone XL Pipeline in the midst of approval, Americans can look forward to the potential of job growth and less dependencies upon foreign imports. The project proposes a 1,179 mile, 36 inch-diameter crude oil pipe. Crude oil a petroleum product is a liquid composed of hydrocarbons, organic compounds and small amounts of metal. It is created through the heating and compression of organic materials, over a long time period. The pipeline would start in the town of Hardisty in Alberta, Canada and then would travel south to Houston and Nederland, Texas where it would be processed. There would be 329 miles of pipeline in Canada, and then another 850 miles in the U.S. The company developing the pipeline, TransCanda, has more than 50 years’ of experience. TransCanada has lead in the responsible development and reliable performance of North American energy infrastructure including natural gas, oil pipeline, power generation and gas storage. Enbridge is Canada’s largest natural gas distribution company. Founded 61 years ago, it is the single largest transporter of crude oil and petroleum products in North America. On May 27, 2010, Enbridge submitted a regulatory application for a $5.5 billion project named Northern Gateway Project (NGP). This pipeline project consists of a twin pipeline system transporting petroleum and condensate from Bruderheim, Alberta, near Edmonton, to the marine terminals in Kitimat, British Columbia. Crude oil or petroleum is used to make gasoline, lubricants for machinery, asphalt, plastics, and many others everyday necessities. Condensate is a chemical and petroleum mixture used to dilute tar sands crude oil for easier pipeline transport. The eastbound pipeline is projected to be 36” in diameter and 1,177km in length, and will deliver 525,000 barrels of oil per day from Bruderheim to Kitimat. The westbound pipeline, the same length as the eastbound pipeline, is to be 20” in diameter, and it will transport 193,000 barrels of condensate per day from Kitimat to Bruderheim (Enbridge, 2011b). This project is currently undergoing a comprehensive and rigorous regulatory review to weigh the stakeholders’ interest regarding the adverse effects on the environment. By the end of 2013, the Joint Review Panel (JRP) will determine whether or not to permit Enbridge to carry out the project.…

They have also been a huge part of the Government of Alberta’s Plan for Climate Change. “Industry has seen results from working together,” said Murray Edwards, Chairman, Canadian Natural. “This announcement removes barriers for collaboration with a broader group of stakeholders. In addition to the estimation of the cost of equity, Star Appliance Company is also considering increasing their current debt ratio of 9.5% to the industry average of 19%. With a higher current debt ratio the WACC will be lower, at a rate of 8.24%. The cost of equity of each product was valued using the beta from the industry averages. The beta of the home appliance industry is 0.95, while the beta of the agricultural machinery industry is 0.88. Through the use of the CAPM model, these betas yield a cost of equity for the home appliances of 11.29% and for the agricultural machinery of 10.7%. The WACC of each individual project is then compared to the project’s IRR. The WACC of the home appliance project was found to be 10.4% and the WACC of the agricultural machinery project was calculated as 9.92%, while the IRR’s of the appliance and agricultural machinery projects were 11.29% and 10.7%, respectively. Therefore, both projects should be accepted based on the notion that the internal rate of return of each project is greater than the weighted average cost of capital.…
