Cosmopolitanism and Person
The point of Appiah's essay is to explain the topic of cosmopolitanism is today's society. Basically, Appiah explains someone who is a cosmopolitan as "a citizen of the world"; it is also "our responsibility to exchange ideas about what is right and wrong in the world." We must also realize that we are responsible for other people in the world, and that every person has a different positive contribution that they can make to the "whole." He uses words, such as "shared humanity," to show that while humans may be spread all over the globe and live different lives, there are also many things that we share in common about everyday life. However, problems are caused when people cannot tolerate others or aren't open to diversity. There are also people who believe that in order to work together with another person, that person must "be like them." Overall, as long as we can work against the negatives, Appiah thinks that cosmopolitanism will be a very important factor in any successful community. The Internet is playing a very important role in the evolution of digital technology, but although it has seen remarkable growth over the last few years, its dispersion remains highly asymmetric. It is widely believed that the so called information age will bring radical change and improvement, and countries all over the world are busy with constructing the necessary infrastructure, the "information superhighways," in order to meet the challenges of the information society of the twenty-first century. Kwame Anthony Appiah’s essay “Making Conversation” tell us about human’s conversation is better expressing themselves in person. Marshall Poe said in his article “The Hive” talks about the evolution of Wikipedia and how people are interacting online. The internet serves a purpose for research, schoolwork, and connections. However, the result from the internet age is loosing communication, lack of social interaction, and the unreliable nature of websites.…

Canada’s multiculturalism, democratic system of government and healthcare system are my top three choices that make me proud to be Canadian. From all the countries in the west, Canada is the only country to rank in the top 20 most diverse and multicultural countries (Morin). Not to mention, Toronto which is a city located in Canada is the most ethnically diverse and multicultural city in the entire planet (Rouse). I am proud to have multiculturalism in Canada since it promotes diversity and demonstrates how people from all cultures can live together in peace and harmony. Multiculturalism is a marvelous way to meet new people and discover various traditions and cultures. Additionally, it brings new foods to savor, interesting cultural activities…

In the service of social harmony, politeness often discourages the expression of negative emotions even if they are felt and encourages the expression of positive emotions even if they aren't felt. I completely agree with this statement as I have often observed people responding in this manner. We have been always taught to be nice to others even if they do us bad or say something nasty but I feel that it limits the freedom of speech and also you are not being true to yourself and to the other person. Not telling the person how you truly feel and sugar coating the words does more harm to your relationship that telling the person honestly. It might look like an easy route to not look like a mean or bad person or not to hurt the other person’s feeling but keeping how you truly feels inside you and just saying good things makes you more negative and eventually the true feelings will come out and things will turn really ugly then.…

Cosmopolitanism creates a more connected world by making citizens more understanding of each other and being able to coexist as Appiah states in “Making Conversations.” He says that, “cosmopolitanism shouldn’t be seen as some exalted attainment” but as an idea that people should use to be able to coexist and be able to associate with others. (71). In both cosmopolitanism and global supply chains we see people that are different come together and work amongst themselves. They have different views and come from different cultures but they are able to put those differences aside and collaborate. Not only do those people look past their cultural differences and values they are able to learn more about them so that they will be able to relate to…

“We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race (Kofi, 1938).” As children we are innocent, playful, and accepting. Then, as we get older we are influenced by our environment; which could be our upbringing, the people around us, and our cultural. According to Rosado, cultural diversity is a system of beliefs and behaviors that includes and respects diverse groups whether in an organization or the world in general. It also acknowledges and values everyone’s socio-cultural differences, and inspires and enables their contribution within the community. It is apparent that we live in a world that is filled with people of all different religion, race, sexual orientation,…

Humankind would be a better place if we were all just citizens of the world. In Martha Nussbaum’s “Patriotism and Cosmopolitanism” she argues whether children should be taught in education to be patriotic or cosmopolitan. Nussbaum’s definition of cosmopolitanism is a person whose primary allegiance is to the community of human beings in the entire world. Nussbaum begins her argument by raising questions about education and how students ought to be taught that hunger in third world countries are problems of global problems and not the countries problem. She says “We should regard out deliberations as, first and foremost, deliberations about human problems of people in particular concrete situations, not problems growing out of a national identity that is altogether unlike that of others.”(P 1)…

Kwame Appiah talks about, we must wrestle with the idea of diversity and its value. We cannot expect people to be the same, we cannot enforce it upon people either, and it’s completely unethical to do so. Why do we value diversity so much? Do we secretly fear the overly globalized world of the future and the identity crises we will face there? What will our lives be like and will corporations annihilate our individuality once and for all? I don’t think that’s the case. Humans are innovators, creators, and regurgitators but we never spit it back at you the way you gave it to us. That is the secret behind change, especially cultural change. Culture, which is by definition, the shared beliefs system of a people applied to all aspects of shared and personal life within that people, depends on the participation of the individual. One person in any given culture is always the unit of measurement in that culture by which you are able to understand and measure the culture. One person can change and so the culture at large has begun to change or diversify or evolve. What makes us change, what drives…

Kwame Appiah thinks that we should start taking individuals as the proper object of concern because it is not a group of people that shapes society, but each individual that makes that group. Individuals have free will, freedom of thought, and freedom of expression. One person can have an idea that can give other people ideas. Many people say that one person does not matter, but…

Individuality and nationality are two completely different concepts; although, they are both strongly correlative to each other. Individuality is the quality or character of oneself that distinguishes one from others; whereas, nationality is what one identifies oneself with, whether it be of a society or a culture. Both individuality and nationality play decisive roles; however, one’s individuality is more important because it promotes creativity and stability in one’s life and in society.…
