In what way was the capture of Constantinople by the Turks a factor in the geographical discoveries in the fifteenth and sixteenth century?
-it leads to one of the largest and most famous discoveries, that the world is round. Since they are in that situation, Spain and Portugal look for another route and later discover that the world is round and not a flat surface.

Explain why and how the Spaniards and Portuguese came to the east.
-the Europeans admired the wonders of the east because of what they hear in the stories. They have the desire to know more about the east. Also, some Europeans trade with Asia, they were easily sold in European markets at big profits. This leads to the desire of the Europeans to trade with the countries in the east.

Why did Pope Alexander VI divide the world between Spain and Portugal? Were the terms of this division fair or justified for each one? Why or Why not?
-it is to avoid the possible war between two nations. At first the division of the world is fair enough for the both of them, no one protested. But in the later months, the Pope nullified the provision, leading to the protestation of the Portugal. Because it is not fair for them that the Spaniards can own lands in their side while they cannot. So they agreed on the treaty of tordesillas. The conditions in the treaty are fair enough for them because they had given equal rights.

Magellan was a mighty explorer because he converted a lot of people to Christianity and he was the first to discover very important places. When Ferdinand stopped in the Philippines on the island of Cebu, he tried to teach people about his religion, Christianity. People want to spread their religion and make more people a believer of what they believe is the one and only true religion. William Manchester writes in “A World Lit Only By Fire”, that, “by the end of the following week virtually every inhabitant of Cebu- a total of twenty-two hundred, according to one of the flota’s crew- had chosen Christ.” To convert thousands of people in just a few weeks to a totally new religion is a tough job, but Magellan was determined. He was also the first to discover many new places. He was the first to discover the tip of South America and sail around it. The passage he sailed through is now called the Straight of Magellan after him. He and his crew were also the first to sail across the Pacific Ocean. He also did it on limited food supplies. Magellan had many positive moments on the trip but he also had a few flaws.…

For instance, the Portuguese were trying to get to Asia by sailing South around the southern tip of Africa. In the other hand after studying maps, Columbus strongly believed that the earth was smaller than it is. He also believed that it had just one ocean. Therefore, he thought that he could reach Asia faster by sailing west across the Atlantic ocean.…

Spain had many explorers and impacts in New World exploration. With a monarchy that was willing to finance and explore, Spain found riches in gold through South, Central, and North America. Of all Spain’s, and the world’ explorers, none are more famous than Christopher Columbus. Every generation of Americans knows he set sail in 1492, but I’m surprised how many don’t realize he landed in the Caribbean, and by mistake. Looking for a spice route to the Indies, Columbus and his crew named the local inhabits Indians because he thought wrongly of his location, and eventually started disease epidemics and slavery in the area.…

The first thing that came to my mind when reading over the first writing assignment was a funny memory trick that I learned when I was younger. Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in fourteen-ninety-two. In remembering this small rhyme, I decided to choose Christopher Columbus as my ocean explorer. At first, I did not know much about Columbus, other than the fact that he sailed the ocean in 1492. So in writing this paper, I decided to do a little research. I used not only our textbook, but the website: “The Columbus Navigation Homepage”.…
