LINEAR REGRESSION
Prof. Jemabel Gonzaga-Sidayen

Spearman rank order correlation coefficient rho (rs)
• Spearman rho is really a linear correlation coefficient applied to data that meet the requirements of ordinal scaling
• Formula:

rs = 1 - 6 Σ D i 2
N3 - N
– Di = difference between the ith pair of ranks
– R(Xi) = rank of the ith X score
– R(Yi) = rank of the ith Y score
– N = number of pairs of ranks

Regression
• Regression and correlation are closely related. At the most basic level, they both involve relationship between two variables, and they both utilize the same set of basic data: paired scores taken from the same or matched subjects.

    The correlation coefficient (r value) is a quantitative assessment of the strength of relationship between the x and y values in a set of (x, y) pairs. The value of r is a measure of the extent to which x and y are linearly related or the extent to which the points in the scatterplot fall close to a straight line. The value of r is between -1 and +1. A value near the upper limit, +1, indicates a substantial positive relationship, whereas an r value close to the lower limit, -1,…

    Personality traits may be important predictors of various health behavior outcomes. Two hypotheses are tested which examined the associations between emotional stability and substance risk. Emotional stability, a domain of personality that has received little research attention, was found to be a predictor of substance risk. The slight, positive statistically significant correlation becomes somewhat smaller when controlling for GPA. Thus, we conclude that GPA partially explains the relationship between emotional stability and substance risk. Overall, the results suggest that personality is a slight predictor of health behavior patterns.…

    The r-value between the variables adverts and airplay is 0.102, which suggests positive correlation. The Pearson r value is close to 0 which means that there is a weak relationship between these two variables. In addition, the changes in advertising budget is not correlated with changes in the number of plays on radio. Furthermore, the p value between Adverts and Airplay is more than 0.05 that indicates that the test is not significant.…

    In today’s society education has become a vital instrument to achieve success. Over the past couple of decades we saw a huge change in the way children would be educated as certain laws were passed to help grantee better education possibilities to those who were less fortunate. Unfortunate, we still have great disparity between students who come to college from different types of high school backgrounds. These disparities may arise from funds for schools, smaller class size, or better equipment for teachers and students. In this study, we will test to see if the type of high school one attends and gender effects the ability for the student to use self-monitoring for evaluating progress on doing well in classes. The three different types of high school students will be private, public schools in rural areas, and public schools in urban areas, and male and female for gender. I hypothesize that the three different groups of students and the different genders will have different scores. The students from private high schools and females will have higher scores for the self-monitoring test.…

    A theme is a vital part of any story. However, to establish a developed theme it is best to use a series of objective correlatives. Objective correlatives are objects that repeat that are connected to the story of push the plot forward. These meaningful objects give much greater depth to your story than without their presence. They allow the author to show the reader details instead of outright telling the reader the details. Additionally, these objects give organizational power such as Jon Gingerich’s farm story. Objective correlatives are used in these methods in all types of text, with T. S. Elliot being one of the best users. Therefore, objective correlatives expand the depth of unspoken communication an author can have with their readers without having to plainly say things.…
